Chronos Chess Clock Repair

I gave up on the Chronos over a decade ago!  The Chronos is utter crap!

I currently use the ZMartFun II, but also still have an old DGT North American.

The numerous reasons why the Chronos is utter crap:

  • I play over 100 tournament games a year.  I need to change the battery once a year minimum.  Those tiny, microscopic Phillips head screws strip easily!
  • The Chronos does not follow FIDE regulations.  In FIDE, it is Game in X minutes with a 30 second increment starting at move 1.  The Chronos starts at move 2 and so you are always 30 seconds behind everyone else using a clock that follows FIDE regulations.
  • Even if the screws did not strip, unscrewing screws just to change a battery is ludicrious.  With the others, slide out and snap in.  Simple as that.

The Chronos is a horrible clock!

I sent my chronos to Sam Timer for repairs when the display began to fade on some digits.

He failed to fix it after 3 months and sent back the clock in the same condition while charging $70.

I recommend you purchase a new clock.

I sent my Chronos to Sam Timer as well in September this year for repairs.
It took 2 months for them to repair it but I think the length of the repair time can be explained by the long postage wait times between the US and where I'm from (Australia.)

They did fully repair my Chronos chess clock, which I'm happy with.

I notice with some of the other posts saying that the Chronos is not the best chess clock.
They are probably right, Chronos is not the best but there are a few things I think they got right.

-solid metal outer shell
-Crystal LED display
-clicky (tactile) push buttons

The problem with the Chronos is they are not always available to buy.

I still use my Chronos clocks, a lot.

The V-Tek has the same things mentioned above.  And it has a bit more

   - larger display, but the same type/quality

   - greater ease and simplicity in setting

   - multicolored led lights instead of only red

Of course the problem with the V-Tek is that it is really expensive.

I bought my first Chronos on Usenet (rec.games.chess) in the early 90s, when the WWW was just getting started. That same clock is still running perfectly to this day. It has a slightly different form factor than later models, but all the essential features are more or less identical. In total, I own 3 Chronos clocks and all 3 are problem-free and pleasant/reliable to use. The menu design could have been better, and the battery exchange could have been simplified, but overall, I do like Chronos clocks, and while there may be better alternatives available now, they were leading the field when they first came out.
