I did a similar thing with my son.Gave him tennis lessons and also did the sports thing with him,but he never took to chess.

He's now an infectious disease specialist.....Two proud parents.-

A thin piece of wood or plastic in there could even stay in permanently, and just raise the Tower board up a little higher when using it, which might actually look nice.

I did manage to browse a website I purchase kitchen equipment from and they sell these flexible cutting boards, not quite 20x20 inches but they have a 2 pack 24x18 size which I could shorten to 20 inches on the longest dimension and only lose an inch on either side of the base platform inner cavity. They're only 1/32" or .75mm thick and I would cut it to fit snug so it wouldn't shift and remain there whenever I switch it up to the rollup boards to change the playing field decor/ aesthetics.

Again that was a very good tip Forked, thank you.

Or cut 4 pieces @ 10”x10" each?

No, I think the one-piece cut board sheet trimmed down to 20x18 inches would be perfect although the 2 inches I'm missing is only 1 inch on either side and the finger holes are well within towards the center of the board at least 4 inches from the sides so I'll be well covered with the one piece of thin flexible plastic. Besides I would already have my hands full with the 4 sections of the magnetic board I wouldn't want to add to the carrier with 3 more pieces if I don't have to, just saying. One solid piece would be the way to go for me.

@QtoQlevel3, I'm interested in how your project turns out. Please share photos when you're done.

Yes, I will Z, I contacted Brad Borkowski and he's making me a custom order with the Deluxe Tower made with 2.36" squares for two boards in Peruvian Walnut and Maple and Padauk and Maple while keeping the 24x24 inch footprint overall and the inner 20x20 inch inner cavity as well. The boards will have a 1.88" gap in the interior spacing because originally the squares were made in a 2.5" square size,  but Brad will fill those two boards with a cherry outer border to match the border of the base piece seeming that the square size I wanted is 2.36". It should be a nice project when completed.

How will a vinyl board sit flat if your insert ends an inch from the edge of it?  Even though the plastic is only 1/16" thick, I think the dip in the vinyl board on the edge squares would bug me.

I double-checked the thickness of these boards, these flexible boards are thinner. They're 1/32" or .75mm thick. That may occur with the silicone material board, not so much with the mousepad or vinyl boards. It wouldn't bother me at all besides those rollup boards have about a 3/4 inch border around the playing field so it wouldn't affect my concentration of what I'm doing during a game. I'm expecting the board to be completed in a few weeks' time. I told Brad to take his time making it. The more time and relaxed conditions to craft would result in a better quality product I always say. Attention to detail.

Well, my two cents is that I would get a board that is very close the the size of the opening.  Even though a vinyl board might hold its edge, there still will be a gap and dip.

And since you are getting this done so nicely getting the inserted board the right size would not be that hard and worth it.

I would wait until you get the board from Brad.  Then I would get the exact size measurements.  Then I would make the inset board just a tad smaller to better fit into the opening.

Also, I would not be afraid to get the board in 2 halves.  This would not bulk up the bag but still make it easier to get the board in and out.

I say all this because I had a table that a friend and I made with a cutout so we could switch boards and tabletops.

All of my roll-up boards measure 18 inches square for the playing field so if the largest border is 1", I'm relatively good to go anything a tad less is Ok. As far as the two-section thin plastic insert I'll see how the flexible boards work out with the one-piece idea I have in mind. They're rather inexpensive and I get two to a pack and I can cut one into equal halves to fit into the interior cavity of the base platform. There is the logical factor of transport size but since the thin flexible cutting board is as such, it could probably be rolled in the same fashion as the vinyl or mousepad rollup boards. Thanks for the suggestion, Ron. I will take your and Forked ideas and put them to the test once the board arrives.

By the way, this is how thin the flexible cutting boards look they come 2 to pack 24"x 18".

With international travel pretty much non-existent these days, I thought I'd share some photos of old Yugoslavia memorabilia that I found at my parent's place last week. It's a photo book and a leather bound flask my dad got from Zagreb when he participated in 1987 Summer Universiade as a staff member. Unfortunately he didn't get any chess sets while he was there. But I'll post some notable pages from the book with my Dubrovnik Minceta to scratch the itch. Enjoy!

Very nice pictures. Do you happen to know the diameter of the king and the pawn? On NOJ the website the king seems to have a diameter of 39mm. So below the ' 75% rule' according to FIDE/USCF.

But to me it looks way better on 5.36" than 5.25" inch. Makes me wonder what the ' original' Dubrovnik board size was.

Well this original set looks great on 60mm squares as on this picture IMO. Novica%201.jpg
