I don't have time to read all pages of that link in reference, but I think the correct term is steel, not iron, since steel discs are often discarded from industrial manufacturing. No matter, iron or steel (which contains iron) does not "puff up" unless it gets a bit of oxidation on the surface (iron oxide or 'rust'). If the bottom of the pieces were sealed, or even if the set was simply kept in normal environment, there should be no rust and certainly no "puffing up." I've had my Drueke set for 40 years and there isn't a speck of rust on any of the weights.
Decent chess set?

Honestly I was just joking, who cares if it's steel or lead? My "luxury" sets have lead bases, but so do my plastic club pieces...

Sorry, didn't catch the humor.
Weighting is a subjective topic. For blitz play, you don't want heavy pieces yet they must be weighted enough to stand when being moved quickly or brushed accidently in the heat of battle. For normal OTB play, I like triple (but not quad) weighted pieces.
Another factor is the board finish. Vinyl tends to be a bit less "slick" and the type of felt or bottom padding of the pieces is important. Wood boards are usually finished with a slicker surface. So for vinyl, I like the newer synthetic felt because it is easier to slide the pieces and offers slightly more "padding" than wool felt. On a finished wood board, leather is OK and regular wool felt is perhaps best. Just personal opinion ...

Agreed on the weighting material. Add to that the price being paid for this set is a mere fraction of equivalent sets offered by HoS, and I think the sets from Chess Bazaar are absolutely great!

Question: in the description of the boards from chessbazaar it said something like 190 ounces? is this correct that would make them a very decent wieght..
Super sweet set-up Ace_Club good to have people you can trust for reviews. From what I've read its a two thumbs up for ChessBazaar I may have to update my rig..

The board is heavy,but I'm not sure it's 12 pounds. When I get around to weighing the pieces, I'll weigh the board, too.

How indecent!
How so?
I suppose it's because mirasma wrote here (http://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-equipment/wooden-chess-sets-in-india?page=10) that iron tends to puff up. My set is also weighted with something that reacts to a magnet, most likely iron. But it seems to be sealed with some kind of filler or gypsum.
Take you time for the weighing. I would be suffice for me to know only the weight of all light together and all the dark pieces. You don't need to weigh each piece apart. My dark pieces are way heavier than my light pieces.
Finally got around to weighing the pieces.
Light = 870g
Dark = 905g
Total = 1775g

just get a chess set...i think u should focus on being a better player
U lost?
Thank you Ace_Club. You have done me a very huge favour. The weight of your set looks better than mine. Did you weigh them with or without the extra two queens?
Here are my weights:
All my light pieces together weigh 808 gramm and the dark ones 704 gramm. Together with two queens that makes 1512 gramm.

i lost? what do u mean? my point is that a chess set is arbitrary and doesn't make u a better player. anybody can do some research about chess sets with a search engine and figure out what chess set he wants so i don't understand the purpose of this thread. also, my comment about focusing about being a better player applies to u as well. don't troll me.
What I mean is you obviously came in to try and stir up crap since you went into the Chess Books & Equipment sub-forum and spout "advice" about focusing on being a better player rather than discussing chess equipment.
Yes, anybody can do research on a search engine for chess sets, but this offers a frank discussion of pros and cons for purchasing from specific vendors.
Sheesh.

hey Everyone.. Happy New Year.
I have bought an awesome chess set,, Arrived Today and I'm very satisfied with the built quality, its price and quick delivery. You may check here:http://www.chessbazaar.com/staunton-triple-weight-club-chess-set-4q-bud-rose-wood.html
Rest there are many options available online/offline. You may get confused the more research you do. Anyways, my best wishes :)
Good Luck !!
Oh shoot, then I have made a mistake. I weighed the pieces without the two extra queens. So to correct myself here are the proper figures:
Set D0167 light figures included the extra queen: 757g
Set D0167 dark figures included the extra queen: 879g
Total: 1636g
@umbrella_corporatio:
I think Ace_Club is right. You're in the wrong sub-forum for your suggestion. And additionally you adopted the wrong tone with your answer. That was unnecessary.
@sandygomez09:
Just the sake of science , could you also treat your pieces with a magnet (to see with what kind of material they are weighted) and weigh them (light and dark pieces apart but WITH the extra queen)? That way we would have more data on the uniformity of the chess sets at chessbazaar.

can someone recommend a chess piece set that won't chip? Seems like my triple-weighted tournament pieces are full of little shards in my chess piece bag after all the jostling around inside my chess bag. I would like something double or triple weighted and preferably under $50US.
Sounds like you're looking for one of the sets being discussed here: http://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-equipment/cheap-chess-set2

That's the exact same set m12_shakes and I bought. Did you get a board with it as well? Would love to see some pics of your setup.

If you are looking for chip proof then plastic is probably the only way to go. I bought a couple inexpensive wood sets for Christmas presents and one of them arrived with a chipped pawn collar. I carry a wood set for my everyday set and so far have been lucky but I think wood is going to chip over time, especially the current designs with the thin collars around the head of the piece.
