Deeply flawed luxury chess board from Chess Bazaar

I think I should remind myself to leave a review for them based on my experience. I also gave them a deadline 2 days ago for a full refund before I reach for CC dispute.

Ogouriev - I had repeated trouble with CB earlier this year - lacquer issues, incomplete pieces, damaged pieces, magnetic travel pieces with useless magnets, border/courier costs CB say are covered but the courier insisted I paid before they would deliver a shipment. A long list of small issues that just kept building. Repeated carefully worded requests to CB customer service were brushed off with at best ‘we will add the $ to your store credit’ ( but only after repeated emails from me). After months I finally got my entire store credit paid out as a refund to my credit card. The slate is clean and ….. it is very, very unlikely I will buy from CB again.

Has this issue been resolved for you? They are not answering my emails at all.

7mokuso
Ogouriev, yes, as I noted, after several months of ping pong emails CB refunded me back to my credit card the entire amount they had held/parked in their store credit for me. I have not done business with them since.

Chessbazaar boards have received many complaints so far. Basically, chessboards made in India are not great quality.

Like many things/items in life, within reason you get what you pay for. There is also the question of quality, longevity and robustness of solid hardwood boards verses veneers. I have learnt that and now prefer only solid boards. Colorado Woodworker (via Etsy) or JLP (via Chess House) are great USA based manufacturers of solid boards, and so far I consider MTM from Russia to probably be the best artisan made solid chess boards available (the equivalent quality and reputation wise would be NOJ, Slovenia, for their limited range of hand made chess pieces). Go to YouTube to view some incredible video’s of his workmanship. CB are resellers, they manufacturer nothing and apparently do nothing quality control wise as a middle man. Chess Empire and House of Chess are Indian manufacturers who appear to only sell what they make, although one can never be 100% sure.

7mokuso--- I bought a Spanish ? veneer board from the Village chess shop (  2.25" squares) in 1984. It has seen a lot of use and it is   still in very good condition. I also have a 2"  sq. veneer board  ( unknown maker) that I bought in a flea market  , also in the early 1980,s.  It is also in very good condition.   This is  despite use by adults, children and my cats.   I am still waiting for the replacement pieces that Chessbazaar  claims that they sent to me on May 6, 2021.   I will send them another email  tonight.

Pretty much agree with 7mokuso.

However, the C.B. boards I got 3 years ago are superb.I had issues with their sets though and all got cleared up after the usual hassles.

I would love just one MTM board, but the weight and price are a bit more than I'd like to deal with.

Of course,as always,there's the W.A.F.

"Wife Acceptance Factor".

Could have "maybe" gotten away with it yesterday, since it was our 48th anniversary.

Not that old.....In my mind.

My wife has her shoes …. So I get to indulge in my new and building chess fascination and collection. But I do need to find time to play chess! …. Oh and spend less time riding and tinkering with my newish motocycle. In amongst all that I still train in martial arts daily. A busy and very fulfilling life!

Don't get me started on my smart speaker audio obsession.-happy.png

Or my guitars.

Powderdigit
On guitars … Maton EGB 808 - solid Blackwood back and sides and Qld maple top (Aust Made)

On speakers …. PMC FB1 (British made)

Both purchased back in the day when I had less sense (and I really don’t have much sense now) … so that’s a low bar…

Chess Bazaar finally did the right thing. They issued a complete refund for the flawed board. It took a lot of back and forth. I also threatened to file a dispute. Thankfully, they spared me the trouble and did what a good merchant should do.

I personally will not order from them again, but I wanted to share that they finally came around. Seems like that is in line with what others have reported here.

I hope ogouriev can get his issues figured out with them as well.

That's great news!

Great news for a unfortunate experience. Happy they finally made this right in the end. I hope your next transaction is a better one. Thanks for letting us know.

Really happy for you. Unfortunately for me they're not responding to my emails, period, which I found very strange. I have not be rude in any way or I demand something unreasonable and yes I checked my spam folder as well if I missed their answer. BTW, your contact name at CB was Mr. Gupta?

It is great news yes, but why make someone jump through hoops and fight them every step of the way. I have been reading all the updates and it sounds like you spent time and aggravation to finally get what they should have given you from day one after they saw those pictures.

I am happy it worked out. But also glad you know that is what a good merchant should have done, to begin with.

+1 @TundraMike - my sentiments exactly. @ogouriev - very odd indeed - Mr Gupta has been my contact in the past and responsive too. I hope your issues are resolved soon too!
