DGT 2500: the new official FIDE chess clock

The manual says that pressing the on/off switch two times quickly (located on bottom) a new game with same settings can easily be started

Does anyone know if you can disable the flags? I was told you're not supposed to have visible timeout flags in a USCF match

(I realize this is a FIDE clock)

Concerning the flags, I don’t see in the manual that they can be turned “off”. Rather, it has a flag “freeze” option.

Flag freeze ON = when a timer reaches zero neither side can move, the lever no longer switches between player clocks, both clocks stop

Flag freeze OFF = when a timer reaches zero, the lever still works, and the player with remaining time clock still counts down

In either case, the blinking flag is displayed

Thank you

Not to derail the discussion, but can someone explain to me why US tournaments play with freeze OFF? Enabling the clocks to freeze *seems* like a good feature to me and my thinking is that the game is over and so the game state should be frozen in time. However, I have never heard a counter against that and I'm very curious. Thanks.

According to the US rules, the game is between the players and no one or anything should interfere.

If a player runs out of time and the opponent doesn’t notice and both players do nothing about it, like say something, the game goes on.  With the clocks still running the second player might run out of time as well.  With both clocks out of time it is a draw.

I think it is not fair but the US rules place all the responsibility on the players.

With FIDE the clock or arbiter can make the call.

Thanks for the great explanation, @Eyechess. It's at least an understandable position for them to take even if it would not be mine. With sound typically disabled (I think?) that makes it even trickier since a player will need to also watch their opponent's clock in order to declare the flag. This doesn't typically happen in shogi where we play with the sound on ... the sounds just sort of become a part of the atmosphere, I suppose. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Anyway, thanks again.

I checked some US Chess retailers and no one seems to have this clock yet.

Amazon has it at about $90 compared to $71 for the 3000.

while I like the looks of this clock, I don’t feel it is worth the extra money as it is.

Lip stick red huh?  Not for me,  too distracting.  Does it come in a different color?  I would trade my red DGT3000 for the wood look version if I knew the vinyl did not peel off.   I also have the 2010 which is my favorite go to clock.

Don't like the look of it at all.

OK, mine arrived and my first impression (ignoring that the back of the box was damaged) is very positive. It has a wide/deep lever, much deeper than expected, and this contributes in making for a big stable base. Starting/restarting a new game is simple, the display is big and clear, the design of the lever makes it very obvious at a glance whose move it is. If there are any questions, please let me know and I'll try to answer them.

Lotsoblots, that sounds promising so far. Can you verify that the option works that adds next time control to remaining time?
lotsoblots

Let me try to figure that one out ... I'm still not sure if I completely understand how it should work mentally...

I don't have a great way to easily take and share a video here, but the answer is YES, brought to you by the modern wonder of time lapsed photography!

I've configured a game with two periods: 30 seconds in 5 moves followed by 10 minutes. Before starting the game (notice it's paused in the middle) press and hold the left arrow button to enable the forced move counter and display the # on the left. This option will be saved as the default for this custom setting in the future.

Make a few moves and then verify the move count by holding down the + button.

Make the fifth move for white and there it is, the 10 minutes have been added!

Verify that white has made 5 moves.

Hope this helps!

It's an okay clock...As the owner of a DGT3000 though, I can't see myself paying $80 for another clock. Especially one that doesn't attach to the DGT board. My 2nd clock, which is mainly used for blitz, casual, and anytime I don't care how bad the clock is abused, is a cheap LEAP clock that ALWAYS counts down seconds also, much like the DGT3000 counts down seconds. Most clocks won't start the seconds-count-down until you're under the 20-minute mark. It also has the more "visible lever" which is double-colored like the DGT2500. One of the best things is that it only takes one single AA battery. I've grown quite accustomed to it, as it does what it's supposed to do, is very lightweight, and is fairly easy to set for any time control. I think I paid under $30 for it on Amazon. It's the model PQ9921 for those who might be interested. However, it seems like Amazon is out of the PQ9921 and is selling the 9917 as a replacement. I'm not sure what the difference is other than the 9921 being the updated version.

lotsoblots, thanks! That is exactly what I needed to know. Any clock I would consider buying would need to have that mode, and the 2500 has it while the 3000 doesn’t. I am not sure whether the LEAP clock offers that.

When you get the chance to play some OTB with your new 2500 please give us an update, with any opinions/ comments from your opponent.

The DGT3000 does offer this mode as well, sort of. You just have to choose fischer mode, but leave the bonus at zero and set the desired moves. In the next phase select the time to be added, or another fischer period if you want another move-forced time added.

Well, I bought one of these on eBay.  It arrived yesterday afternoon just in time to use it at my chess club last night.
The clock works great.

The LEAP is a great bargain for the price. Had mine for a few years with no problems.
