Hope someone can help. Must be exiting to own a book that have belonged to Cecil Purdy!
Does anyone recognise the signature in this book inscription?

I searched a bit when this first posted but didn't find anything. I assumed english was the writer's native language and that they were possibly Australian, Purdy being from Australia. I checked a few FIDE and Australian Chess Federation lists of players from about 1920 - 1972 but didn't see any names I thought could match the signature. I read up a little on Purdy to see if someone in his life would match, no luck. Anybody's guess to the signature is as good as mine. From the way Purdy was addressed, it looks like the signature starts with at least two initials "SH", and possibly a third. I just took wild guesses at the rest.
They might be just someone he played somewhat frequently in clubs or more minor tournaments.

You might get more responses/help if you were to post the photos in an upright (portrait) orientation! Zooming in on the inscription/signature would also be helpful.

With my Firefox browser I can right-click the picture and choose "View Image". The viewed image is considerably larger than the displayed image.

Yes Toldsted it was a complete surprise when the book arrived. It wasn't mentioned in the for sale ad. The book itself was of interest because I have an interest in that period of Soviet domination of chess and I searched this forum and someone else recommended the book. The price was also very modest compared to the price the book seems to sell for on other book sites. So I was very happy. And then when I discovered it appears to have come from the library of C J S Purdy it was the icing on the cake. Now if that signature in the inscription turns out to be from a famous or prominent chess player then it would be one of my best buys ever!!

Thank you Gomer_Pyle for your research efforts. Appreciated. I did a bit of research myself and so far have not had any success. It looks like it reads S H Z Womander or similar comparing the letters to other letters in the inscription.

I've wasted probably 15 minutes trying to decipher the inscription. I got most of it, but what's the phrase after "happy memories"? Is it "of hard encounters"? (The guy had/has the absolute worst handwriting, lol.)

Lol
Thanks Escherehcse
"many happy memories of past encounters" I think.
Yeah, now that you mention it, "past encounters" would make more sense. I never would have guessed it though, haha...

Thank you Quasimorphy
I think you have found it!! I will research this person some more. Thanks again.

I noticed that, too. Very odd. Also, this source has the same date of death:

Aussie date format is Day/Month/Year. That's January 6, 1973 in the inscription.
Also ran across this to put a face to the name:

Those crazy Aussies...
I purchased a chess book that appears to come from the chess library of C J S Purdy. Does anyone recognise the signature in the inscription? It appears to that of a past opponent of Purdy

f Purdy.
