Drueke table -- why is the drawer of the side!?

Bought a beautiful Drueke table today with 2.5" squares. I go to start setting it up. and I notice that the drawer was placed *on the side*!? Why would you design a chess table with the drawer on the side? Wouldn't it be much more practical to put it on the ends where the players will be sitting?

Mine has side drawer too. My legs are rounded. Paid $75. Debating to refinish

It may be because it would be easier to accomodate the chess pieces on the side rather than having a chess player open and close this chess drawer again and again.
