Dubrovnik and Zagreb Comparison

Sort:
Kimbacal

Comparison pictures between a 3.6 inch crimson and natural Dubrovnik and a 4 inch ebonized and natural Zagreb. Both from Chess bazaar. As you can see there are other differences besides the knights and the offset color "hats" on CB's versions. Both are similar weights and have nice finishes. Which do you like better? Clearly I like both!

Nice job Kim ! :)

Thanks!

Nice pics.! Both are very nice but, its a personal decision for the buyer. I like the Dubrovnik Pigs better but, thats just my personal tastes.

Chicken_Monster

These are all gorgeous, and I can't decide. Do you have a link as to where one can purchase?

Hi chicken, both of my sets are from chess bazaar www.chessbazaar.com but I know house of Staunton also has them. I am very pleased with both. Good luck and let us know what you get!

Kim... Actually your pics of the Dubrovie portray the actual colors of the wood better than most I've seen... Others I've seen were very red, but not so in your pics...I like the color of yours much better and again great job on the home pics...:)

Yes.. Great job on the pics Kim.!! I still like the Fat Pigs of the Dubrovnik better.! Its just my personal tastes though.Cool

I too like both, but I've been playing with the Dubrovniks for a little over a month continuously now, and I must say I really like them for OTB...they feel great. In addition, this may seem like blasphemy to the Dubrovnikfiles here but I prefer the CB Knights to the Noj Knights...I have both by the way.

ROBB_CHESS

Hey SDT... I know you'll get this one... There's Gibson's and Fenders, but I still prefer my Rickenbacker :)

And I prefer my Kohno Professional J Spruce 😃

TundraMike

I noticed not all Zagreb sets have opposite Kings & Queens finials but of course they all have crosses on the Kings.

The CB Knights are close enough for me. Can you please do some pics of both Knights showing face on view, side view & back views? I think it would be very interesting.Thanks.!

Its rather odd too imo since I dont see eastern european sets with crosses on their kings , isnt Zagreb eastern european ? My zagreb set only has opposite colored finials on the bishops , which I prefer .  The crosses on the kings don't bother me in the least but it is rather strange and probably not accurate .  I have also noticed russian sets that have opposite colored finials on kings , queens and bishops and some with only kings and queens having opposite colored finials , but none have the crosses on the kings , which is typical for eastern european sets I believe .

Kimbacal

If the lack of Christian iconography on some sets relates to communist influences (post 1911ish?) then maybe earlier Eastern European would have crosses. I'm just guessing. Maybe a historian could weigh in here. Robb? Zagreb of course, if Bobby Fisher era would be communist.

TundraMike

maybe I used the wrong word "crosses"  but the Zagreb sets i see have a finial other than a round ball on the King but not necessarily the opposite colors.

Kimbacal

Hey Wiscmike. Yes I wasn't clear. I didn't mean crosses as in crucifixion, just the ornate symbols on the top as opposed to simple round ball as in the Dubrovnik. And I actually prefer the Dub style for this myself.

TundraMike

I do also Kim.  Although I have to say I played on a Zagreb set a couple weeks ago made of Padauk & Boxwood with vert fat pawn bottoms and it was really nice.

The "Zagreb" is not Eastern European, it's just a made up design that takes design cues from various mostly Eastern European sources. I wouldn't look for any historical significance why they do or don't have cross-shaped finials on the King.

Also, the HoS Zagreb at least gives you the option (comes w/ interchangable ball finial and cross finial...)

Frank.. Thanks for the Info & I think Ifekali said the exact same thing. Its just Made up BS but, it still looks pretty darn good on a chess board.!
