FIDE Chess Set

Hi there.

Just a heads up in a FIDE chess set on ebay which looks a bit of a bargain.

It has one damaged queen and pawn but looks minor and maybe could get replacement pieces.

It's a Buy it Now £58. Tempted myself but I'm hanging on waiting for a chavet set.

I hope you find the Chavet set you’re looking for. It is a good choice.

That's a great deal, even with the two damaged pieces!

I'm looking for the ultimate bargain for Chavet. Ideally 3 inch, felted and weighted although I would be happy with unweighted as long as it was felted and no more than £50. Still think prices are high because of Christmas. A lot of the sets are at least double what they were around October time. I'm happy to wait it out 🙂.

Yes I thought it was pretty good as one of the damaged pieces was a Queen and there were extra Queens with that set anyway so it was just the pawn that an issue. It's already been sold which is not surprising but anyone interested in this set should keep an eye on Seller (he's a UK seller though) as he's sold quite a few of these sets now some in perfect condition at a higher price but still a lot less than you would pay. Wonder where he sources them from 🤔.

I was tempted, but the listing specifically said, no shipping to the US. I sent him a message to confirm this and he didn't even reply back to me. Usually shipping a set from the UK to the US is about $30usd. Shipped price of $110usd is 1/3 the price of a new "legal" FIDE World Chess set. Totally worth it even with the 2 damaged pieces. I completely understand not wanting to bother with International shipping. When I post eBay listings as a seller, I do not do International shipping either.

Well just rude not to reply to your message. I spent a couple of years selling on ebay and always replied to any messages.

I've mailed a few sellers recently about chess items just asking for more information which should have been provided in the first place and received no reply. I wouldn't even consider buying from someone who can't be bothered to reply to a simple enquiry.

If they don't respond to that what happens further down the line if there's a problem that needs resolving.

You have exquisite taste sister! Actually if there is such a thing as Craigslist there in UK, you'll find easily 3" chavet for little. eBay is tough to find Chavet for little.

Thought that looked like a bargain so I pulled the trigger and bought it last night. That was a great 'heads up' so thanks for that. I may not have done it  if I had a zero blood alcohol count but I've been after one of these sets for ages and just haven't felt I could justify a £250 set of wooden pieces. Now just need a nice board to go with it as my old plastic number just will not do.

The prices for the Chavet sets on eBay are expensive lately. There was a B207 asking for $450 not too long ago.

If it's not too late, ask the seller to use extra padding when shipping. Ideally, wrap each piece in bubblewrap. Or at the very least, stuff the interior of the box with paper towels so the pieces don't come loose and rattle around. I suspect that is how the original damage occurred. Post some pics when the arrive. Enjoy!

@Trev1973 Congrats!

Oh that's great. I knew there were a few people after this set. When you receive it would be really interested to see some photos 🙂.

I'm not really sure what's a reasonable price for these sets but I know with the b202 sets there are sellers asking over inflated prices.

I think low 300s was the high side before if the condition was good. I still see some smaller Chavet sets going for 50 gbp once in a while.

QueenClaudia2003

Yes the smaller sets were averaging around £30 to £35 and have jumped up to at least £50.

I'm waiting for prices to even out again.

Ok folks the pieces have arrived. The seller used a very sturdy box that took a knock in transit.

They used heaps of polystyrene filling and bubble wrapped the box.

There some historical damage to the outer box. Can't see that this would have happened in transit to me.

They used heaps of bubble wrap in the box interior.

Pieces all present and look pretty good.

I was hard pressed to find the damaged pawn. The old eyes aren't what they used to be but even so its a really good repair.

The queen had more damage but I couldn't get a good image of it.  From my perspective you'd be hard pressed to notice once the piece was on the board and in use, not that it will be used much as its an extra piece.

All the other pieces looked fine to me and I would say that was £60 well spent.

Thanks for the update and photos. Wow that was really quick on the delivery!

It's good to hear he packaged it all up safely. Like you said the Queen will be a spare anyway.

I an pretty certain you could probably resell this item on ebay for more than you bought it for so definitely money well spent!

Would love to see it all set up on board when you get one 😀.

Nice catch!
