I have to say to have such confusion over whether the official set has been altered and stability issues and poor customer service and confusion over whether or not the set is a limited edition and what not is unacceptable. Additionally, on worldchess’s website they have a chessboard advertised as the official world championship chessboard. But there is a problem. The boards on the website have black and white spots to indicate the black and sides of the board, but if you look at videos of the last championship, you will the board they were actually using had no such spots. So the website lied. I had considered getting this set, but not now. Fide and worldchess should be ashamed of themselves. They need to straighten this mess out. Perhaps dgt as well I think they are involved. The set uses their technology and set is also on their website as well. The whole thing is a confusing mess.
FIDE Official World Chess Set - changed?
Anything is more pleasant than those dreadful bogstandard tournament pieces with the German knights.
What tournament pieces do you refer to? these?
If so, what is wrong with the knight in the set?

I asked world chess.com customer support team about “do they redesigned the set”, and their answer is “NO”, they told me that it is because “different artisans have different carving techniques, and might look a little different”.
BTW, in my opinion, the WCC official set really has poor QC, do not recommend to buy this set. However, the DGT set is a much better set (e-pieces), and can be found on Amazon with price around $550…
Figured to share my opinion from another post:
After having the opportunity to actually play with the DGT Official 2013 FIDE chess set on a DGT e-board, I can say that it they are gorgeous and wonderful to play with IMHO. Pictures do not do these pieces justice. When the pieces are paired with the correct chessboard such as the DGT rosewood e-board, and the play area is lit properly, the whole chess set becomes "eye candy" which makes study or play even more enjoyable at extended periods of time. The longer I stared at them, the more that my subjective brain appreciated the new design.
Next, I could confirm that the weighted pieces added to the satisfaction of handling quality wooden pieces whether you slid the pieces across the board or lifted and placed them on their squares. There is a positive tactile difference when comparing the new design to the stock classic and unweighted wood pieces that come with every DGT board.
Finally, there is no way to mistake pieces from one another. This is a non-issue for masters who play blindfold, but visual enthusiasts like myself need to enjoy what is seen with the naked eye. These pieces do not disappoint.
