Wow, what a classic! Anyone who knows anything about Soviet sets can see what a prize you have there. Congrats, cgrau, and thanks for sharing. Absolutely beautiful.

.......It is so exquisite that I believe it to be an original tournament set, not a reproduction mass produced for the Soviet public........

This version really was a set for the highest ranking tournaments, but at the same time it has been available for a simple Soviet people. The problem was that not every Soviet citizen could afford to buy the set - it had not the most affordable price in those days...

Thanks, Mike. This set is truly a cut above all my other Soviet vintage sets.

Thanks for the historical information, Pen. This is the first Soviet set of this level of quality that I've seen. And unfortunately I can't share the feeling of holding them, other than to say that they are even more impressive to the hand than to the eye. A complete joy!

Thanks, El C! Well-weighted and with a gorgeous honey patina. A treasure!

Great set and nice table!

Did you build the table?  What are the square sizes?  What wood did you use?

Many thanks! I didn't build the table, cghori. I bought it from House of Staunton. It's the Frank Camaratta Signature Table HOS introduced at Christmas. The top is mahogany. The squares are 2.375" and are made of rosewood and maple. I like it very much and it accommodates most of my sets from 3.75" on up.

Congratulations, the quality looks impressive and I imagine that they have a unique feeling to hold.  Thank you for posting the photos as this is as close to one of these sets that I will probably ever get.  Have a good vacation!
