Flohr Botvinnik "Gift" set ...

nullnullHi All - I just received this one in yesterday from Russia. It is a 40's/50's 4" King version of the same style as the Flohr Botvinnik set Chuck has, BUT not weighted as heavily. Also the "light" pieces may have been painted red. But that has really mellowed into an almost russet brown/tan color and is quite pleasing. Just the right amount of wear in all the right places of a used set from that era. There is a pic in the Soviet Championships book (pink cover) of a similar set in use. The wood must have been good stock as even the knights ears are all still intact. LOVE those knights happy.png !! I would be afraid to use such a set in "combat" as the waistlines are ultra slim. It is on my 2.25 " Drueke maple/walnut board so you know it is a good sized set. Thanks for looking -Ronbo  nullnullnullnullnullnull

Gorgeous specimen of this historic set. Good score Ronbo!

Looks good for a 60 year old chess set.

Thanks Gents. I was very pleased to see the majority of the vintage grey felt bottoms still very much intact. Nice and springy happy.png . One interesting note about the Soviet Championship book is the pic of GM's Tal and Flohr analyzing a position with a similar set. Tal is reaching for a piece while standing beside Flohr. There appears to be a wrong set style bishop on the board too (!) on e3. Curious ...surprise.png
