Friday Night's Set--Pinney Liberty Wartime Pieces on Vintage Drueke Board

Friday night we played for the first time with my wartime Pinney Liberty pieces. We know they date from the early forties because they are unweighted, all lead having been diverted to arms manufacture. Despite this, they have enough weight in the bases to be well-balanced. These pieces are in mint condition, and came in a redwood box that I refurbished with Liquid Gold and steel wool. The pieces paired nicely with a vintage Drueke No. 64 board. The kings are 4.0" and the squares are 2.25". The set has a minimalist design, with distinctive, blocky knights somewhat reminiscent of the Lardy knights. Like many Anglo-American sets, the pawns are relatively small, especially when compared to the proportions of typical Soviet sets. A subtle effect of ideology, I think.

Very nice set up. I have an older Drueke as well and I love that "golden oldie" look.

I really really really like that board, Chuck!

And your study room that doubles as a display room/library basement.

Thrilling sets of yesteryear happy.png. I wonder how many great sets are wasting away in closets unloved?
