G Butterman Chess Board

Sort:
Eyechess

I have talked with Glen Butterman from Ohio about those boards he is producing.  You will recall that he has those boards made that are 1/16" rubber mousepad type boards that have all polyester for the top.  Because of this the boards can be rumpled up and still lay flat.  Because of the all polyester material the pieces do not stick but can slide across the board.  These boards are digitally printed and not screened.

Originally he had boards with Walnut and Cocobolo for the dark squares.  He also had his copyright lightly printed on the h1 square.  I believe it was Bawker that asked him to lose the printing on the square.

I also told him that a nice green and buff would be perfect for a chess player's needs, and we could use 2.0" as well as 2.25" sized boards.

Well, he delivered and delivered very well.  I received my boards Saturday and used the 2.25" Green board tonight in a rated game (which I won).

Here are the pictures (The set is the HoS B. H. Wood in Golden Rosewood and there is a Chronos II clock in use as well):

By the way, Glen is 80 years old!  He told me he has been working on getting the perfect chess board built for at least 3 years.

All of us at the club really liked the colors on this board.  The green and buff are perfect.

That's a great looking board! Much better placement of his copyright. I didn't find any boards in his ebay store. Do you know when he'll start selling them again? Do you have pictures of the other colors as well?

Eyechess

There are pictures of the other colors in a different topic, but he does not have any now anyway.

He is currently having them made in small numbers, like a total of 20 in green and a few of those with the smaller size squares.

He is actually camping this week and is out of touch until next week.

I do not know if he will put these on eBay or not.

Depending on the cost I'll pick up some of these for sure.

could someone please share a link where to purchase/order these?

The link to his ebay store is http://www.ebay.com/sch/gsbutter/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_ipg=&_from=

Nothing for sale there now though. Not sure if he sells elsewhere.

Great looking board.  I have one in the early release and these boards can be folded up weeks at a time and lay flat, they are amazing.  I wish he could mass produce them for 1/2 the cost but this board will probably last a life time.

We are in on this process really early, still in the formative stage.  This green, for instance is totally new.

A couple of us have put him in contact with some of the online retailers to sell his product.  The one that I talked with will be contacting him next week when Glen gets back from camping.

I really think that he will also get these made in volume bringing the price down.

There are two things that differentiate his boards from all the others.

The first is the material.  It is a 1/16" rubber instead of the 1/8" on the other mousepad boards.  And the material is all polyester with no cotton like the others.  This makes a board that can be folded without creasing.  It also does not stick the pieces allowing them to slide on the board.

The second is that the board is digitally printed and not screened as all the others are.

Yes I support quality products like this so as long as the price is within reason I'm in for at least a few. I don't expect them to be like $5/board or anything but if they head over $15/ board I'd probably buy a personal and possibly a replacement one but that'd be it. I'd be most interested in them for scholastic use however if I can afford a more bulk purchase of them.

I do not have that direct of a line with him to order one specific color board.

Also, he does have a minimum order size of these.  I don't see gray as being a standard color board.

However if you want to try, message him on this site.

Thanks for all posting on chess com.

I just placed six different chessboards on ebay under my ebay name of gsbutter.  I have 8 of each in stock and this will help me to see best selling boards.

Glen gorgeous boards, that red & gray is striking.  I am sure they will all be gone before the weekend is out, quality always sells.

Mike, I remember now him telling me about that red and gray board.  It's the Ohio school colors.

I'm really liking the burl and marble colored boards.

There's one green buff with 2.25" squares left FYI

I think a green marble/buff board will be a hot seller!

I purchased one. I'd gladly buy more if the prices can be lowered a bit but I have to at least get one for myself and support a quality product. Look forward to it!

The above will take you to one of his boards and if you see under it it'll suggest his other boards you can find the links too.

I see the board using the direct link from above, but searching for his other listings still returns zero results. I suspect Polarchess and I are prevented from seeing them due to restrictions on Canadian IPs given that these don't ship to Canada...?
