The recent ones I bought from amazon were 2012!
Good grief!! I think that such IS the issue! MUST be some way to bypass or find OLD discs. WHERE did you find the date on your original discs?
The date on Disc 1 is on the first line (at the beginning of the line) of the fine print underneath the large "UBISOFT".
I imagine there are ways to crack the copy protection, but I don't know how to do any of that. How to find old discs? Well, we know that at least one copy exists...
OH for crying out loud! E bays sells old discs (2002) for $50.00!! Good grief!
Don't forget that eBay sellers (and I'm sure Amazon sellers) sometimes use stock photos (not actual photos of the items being sold). So you'd have to contact the seller to verify the copyright dates on the discs.

Oh, and about copy protection. When I bought my CM10 discs, I tried making an archival copy of the discs, and my ImgBurn software wouldn't allow it. So that would imply that the CM10 disks *are* copy-protected, which fits in neatly with the How-To-Geek article stating that SafeDisc and SecuROM were used from 2003 to 2008.
So, I'm betting that my CM9000 discs are *not* copy-protected, while my CM10 discs *are* copy-protected. So I was probably lucky to get CM9000 discs that were made before Ubisoft went to copy-protected discs.
My CD and packaging is very close to that Amazon listing. The only difference on the front of the package is that mine doesn't have the "0000-FRT" in the top left corner -- otherwise it's spot on. The back looks similar but some of the listings are slightly different.
The CDs itself are a little more different. Mine is listed as 2002, and most of the file datestamps are 7/31/2002 with one file as early as 7/27/98.
I'm off to look for some online copies with possibly a later timestamp.
One has to also be sure that the discs are the US version and NOT the UK version if you are living in the US.

I was going to suggest that we compare ISO hashes, but I don't think that's necessary now. On Disc 1, I just checked the datestamps, and the latest ones (and most of the files) are 7/29/2002 (a difference of only 2 days!). And yes, the os.dat file is 7/27/98.
Yeah. I just looked at mine. My setup.exe file is dated 1/12/1999. Well BLEEP! That just ruled out that issue!!!
I was able to find the GOG version of the game (setup_chessmaster9000_2.0.0.8.exe) and it installed fine on CM10. It's probably not legit since it appears GOG pulled the game from its catalog back in 2012.
However I would be leery to pay for that old-games site as it may either be the UK version or even still have issues with loading on Win10.

My setup.exe is the same date as yours. Idk, maybe the setup.exe file had nothing to do with the copy protection?
GOG.com is a site that sells games, probably like Steam or Epic. I assume that they modified the original files to allow for bypassing the copy protection.
After playing around with CM9k, I brought up CMGM and it's so much nicer, especially on my larger display with higher resolution. And I prefer the GM tourney since I can just bypass watching the game play between engine personalities and just get the result. Will have to play that more. I forgot how fun this program was.
The one thing I do like from CM9k is the left hand navigation bar. It's much easier to go from room to room, rather than the small unrecognizable icons at the bottom of GM edition.
It's the 3 d Newspaper set in CM 9000 that I really enjoy. Grandmaster has it but not 3d if I recall correctly.
