uscf will have some good ones. They sell House of staunton sets. I got a good wood set and board for 130ish. if thats to much they have a bit cheaper for 90 for the whole thing. dont know if that was a christmas special tho.

OF course if that is still to expensive. They have plastic sets that look good also.

should i get 16" or 20" board

EDIT: also how can i determine the correct size of chess men to buy

EDIT 2 : I am looking at this one

seems very nice

20 inch board is the ONLY way to go.  Look for a 4" king (3 3/4" is OK, but no smaller).  Be sure to get a staunton set, not some weird renaissance, queen anne, or asian style set - real chess is played with staunton.  If you want something decent but not too expensive, there are several chess stores on ebay.  Get a nice board too, but if you get one with a built in box, make sure its flat enough that you dont have to reach akwardly to play.

happy hunting!

how important is the 20" i have seen some 18" and 19" on ebay which look very good

A regulation board for tournaments has 2.25" squares, which is 18" of board space.  Add a 1" border and you have a 20" board.  I think you would be disappointed when you opened the mail to see how . . . puny an 18" board looks, especially when your nice rosewood pieces are crowded tightly on it.

This is a bit pricey, but its also a specialty store (what a set SHOULD look like):

Just received the HOS Grandmaster set with ebonized boxwood pieces today.

The material, workmanship, and feel are astounding. It's really hard to believe it's a ~$150 set!

The workmanship on the last batch of pieces is down a bit from before -- the knights aren't as well carved and there is a little bitof crudeness to the queens' crowns. It's still a nice set, though, and one of their best values.
