Kotov's The Art of the Middle Game
Good middlegame book
Pachman's two volume Modern Chess Tactics, in conjunction with his three volume Modern Chess Strategy (also available in a one volume abridged edition) can't be beat.
Art of Attack in Chess by Vladimir Vukovic. Might not be on your level if you're a beginner, but a very good book.
Just received a copy of Ivan Sokolov's new book Winning Chess Middlegames, which focuses on typical pawn structures and the typical plans for those structures. Should be interesting.
Kotov's The Art of the Middle Game
This is a very good book. if you dont know the old notation i may be hard at first but its worth getn through it
Learning descriptive isn't too hard and is well worth the effort as it opens up a whole new world of chess books, including some very good ones that have never been translated to algebraic. For someone wanting to learn I would suggest getting a book like Reti's Masters of the Chess Board or Chernev's The Most Instructive Games of Chess Ever Played and just work through the games. By the end of the book you will have a good grasp on it, and you will have enjoyed playing through some good games.
The Sokolov book is mostly about structures typically arising from classic d-pawn openings, i.e QGD Tartakower, Tarrasch, QGA, and slav. Very useful if play these openings as white or black, but the book isn't as general middle game as the title would lead people to expect.
Anybody have a suggestion for a good book on the middlegame? Thanks.
