Guardian Tournament Set

Just wanted to get some opinions of this set from the chess store.

Surprised I haven't found any threads on it. Overall I like the design and looks like a quality set albeit pretty expresive at $40. I like what they did with the knight. The only thing holding me back is the price.

I understand, as to some 40 bucks is a lot of money, so here's my choice for you and save 20 bucks...

Thats a nice set Robb, I have the HOS Rekyavik plastic set in Black/Ivory and Red/Natural and it's a very nice set so I don't really NEED this set. I stumbled on the above set while looking for vinyl boards. $40 is on the high end for plastic pieces. The Rekyavik are $17 and that Fischer set is $20. On second thought I'm not sure how I feel about the queen in this Guardian set.

Yep... That tear drop queen just doesn't do it for me...knights are a bit modern for my taste, the bishops head seems to large, and the rooks have have more cuts than I could count lol :) Just me though being to pure old school...

Spot on about the rook and queen, I actually like the bolbuos bishops and the Knights. The queen I may be able to get used to but so many turrets on those rooks... Uuugh I'll pass on this one!

All the Bishops I know have Fat Heads & big egos.. Repent now or else.!Cool

I like it.  It looks funky but indestructible.  I would buy it if I wasn't already "rich" in plastic sets.

I know what you mean, objectively speaking there are ways I wish this set was different but when I look at it at a glance there's something I like. In fact just by looking at it the Queens crown has grown on me, it's still a classic look.

I've actually gotten two sets from the chess store,

http://www.thechessstore.com/#!product/PSMSBT/Master-Series-Plastic-Chess-Set-in-Black-Tan-3-75-King

and

http://www.thechessstore.com/#!product/PSZSBC/Zukert-Series-Plastic-Chess-Set-in-Black-Camel-4-25-King

I absolutely love the first set, it is unweighted but still an excellent set of pieces and at $8 its hard to beat.

As for the second set, I can't stand it.  Part of that is that 4.25 inches is just too large for my tastes but I also find the bishops to be ugly and the king as well to a lesser extent.

However, I would say that they have pretty good craftsmanship on thier products, and as a whole I would recommend the company.

Currently, my favorite plastic set I own is the plastic collector's series from HOS:

Do you have the Ivory or the Natural HOS Collector?

WOW! The Knights in this set are Masterpieces! Also I like this Queen cuz it has no sharp edges at the top.

I was pleasantly surprised by this set.  I have it in Natural and the picture is Ivory.

this is the Zurich Series set from the House of Staunton.

It sells for $28 but there always is at least a 10% discount available.

I sold or gave away my Collector Series, Marshall Series and Hastings Series sets, keeping only this one as my token plastic set.

I like the Guardian chess set. When it comes back in a 5 color set I'll be buying along with another 1/2 Guardian set to complete the set into 3 full sets. These pieces play very well in tournaments and blitz games epecially when playing outdoors in a windy Washington Square Park in New York City. The Queen's design is perfect. I've had sets where the queen's coronets are so pointed and sharp one tends to injure a hand reaching quickly to make a move. The rooks aren't bad either about the same as the Zurich set show in another Eyechess' photo input. I guess you can't please everyone's taste but this style is AOK by me.

I'm not so sure the Guardian will come back.  TCS seems to have cut back on their line of premium plastic sets.

The Crown series hasn't been offered for well over a year.  The Pro-Tourney has also vanished, along with the Rogue Knight and Guardian.  They still offer the Zukert, but are sold out of the most popular colors.  It's a shame to see these nice sets leave the marketplace.

I hope I'm wrong and that TCS will eventually re-stock, but it's not looking good.

Mr. Crappov I spoke with Ryan a sales representative from The Chess Store and he assured me that the Guardian will return but not the Rogue or Crown Series plastic chess sets. However the Pro Tourney Plastic set will be back as well with a slightly newer designed Knight. These sets are slated to return mid to late August or even early September '15 and I believe the 5 color Guardian set configuration will be available as well for about $79.95 which boils down to 2 & 1/2 sets. I plan to buy another half Guardian set in Ivory to round out the bunch into 3 full sets. Why will I purchase 3 sets of the same style in different colors? I like to keep things visually interesting each day I play and having a color choice of the same set fits right into my scheme of things at the end of the day.

This is great news!  I'm guessing the Pro-Tourney knight will be redesigned so that the ears are less fragile.  Just a guess, as this is a weak spot in an otherwise great design.  (The Crown has the same weakness.)  I will definitely pick up a Guardian when it becomes available again.

I love my Crown set and hate that it's discontinued ---->>

Mr. Crappov you're set remind me of the Hastings set from the HOS website which runs about $24.95 and nicely weighted @ 45 oz. The Rooks and pawns on the Hastings are different but all the other pieces seems to be spot on identical. Not bad for a quarter of a C-note. I picked up the Zurich sets from the HOS as well both in Natural and Ivory. I like to have diversity in my chessmen. I'm thinking of picking up a '92 Fischer/Spassky wooden set from Rick Knowelton from the ancientchess.com website. He informed me today that he will be obtaining that set for sale very soon. The set is in the Zagreb or Dubrovink style of chessmen with contrasting colored tops on the King, Bishop and Queen pieces such as in the photo below. The king isn't visible but you kind of get the idea.

I agree about the Hastings.  It's a great set and a great value.  There are similarities with the Crown but the Crown is a larger, heavier set with thicker felting.  Good luck with your purchase. Let us see when it arrives!  Here's my Hastings ---->>
