And sorry for the pics - they aren't very useful - e.g. a side-profile of the knight would be nice - I'll post some proper pics when I get it
Help identify HoS chess set

I think the wide cut in the bishop's miter is a clue that it is the Collectorseries. But what do I know I have only seen pics of the fancy HOS sets on line.

I love knocking over pieces when I have the OP's chess set, they are nice and heavy, enough to destroy the opponent :D
Nope. HOS sent out plenty that way, as a mark of its deluxe status.
Ah, it says online that only the kings have leather bottoms. I wonder when they started doing the billiard cloths on the other pieces?
I just hope it gets here in one piece!

IIRC, in the late 90s they used to sell the Collector set in three editions - Basic, Signature and Supreme (or something like that). The additional queens only came with the higher end editions, which also included leather pads on all pieces, and I think a Piere Carton box for the Supreme, among other things. So this is not unusual, and I believe they were offering one of those "Signature" editions of the set w/ leather pads on all pieces just a couple of weeks ago in their Curiosity shop...
Very nice looking set, judging by the pictures. Enjoy playing with it...

I would definitely say that it is one of the "Collector" editions...and at a guess, it looks to be the 4.4" King set. Hope this helps, cheers, John C.

Yep, that looks just like the HOS collector. I own a 3 3/4" set and this looks like a 4" ebony and boxwood. It looks identical to my set except, well, it's just a little larger. Oh, and made of ebony and boxwood instead of plastic. I actually have 2 sets off Ebay, cheap enough to buy 2. Also used though. Wonderful sets. Satisfying heft, classic proportions, bishops with that "teardrop" cut; I'm jealous! Enjoy.

Yeah, you're right. 4.4". The pieces fit too well in the case. What's a little confusing in the pictures is whether they've been pushed down into the slots or is the grey area because the pieces are slightly too short: on reflection I chose the wrong door.
My bad.

Thanks everyone for your comments! And thanks Frank for giving me some background! It's arrived but I can't get to the Post Office until Saturday. I'm going to enjoy playing with it - I didn't know it was a 4.4 inch king - it might be a bit big for my board! If it is too big, then I might get a nice profit selling on Ebay... But then again, I might fall in love with it (quite likely) and end up buying a bigger board!
Hi, I just bought this 2nd hand off a website (it hasn't arrived yet), can anyone tell me more about it? I know that it is HoS from the box but I can't tell what kind of pattern/set it is or the age of the set.
