Hi all hope you’re well

has anyone seen a set like this before? I think its quite old but I like it so I’m wondering if it looks country or style specific?

many thanks

Interesting thanks what makes you say that?

I saw similar sets when I was in Spain. I don't have a lot of sources beyond that. I did just find this chess.com thread https://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-equipment/spanish-chess-set-6 about the design starting with what looks like a newer version and ending with an older one. I've not seen it in anything but red before and I don't know what's going on with that hollow bass in your last pic either, but especially looking now at the ones in the other thread it does look like "the same set" to me.

ok 4th set down looks like a smaller version also in black https://www.schaak-museum.nl/other-european/oeu-spain/ (and 2nd set has similar knights)

Clearly an old Spanish Escardibul set from the 1920’s or 30’s. Very rare pieces these days.

Thanks everyone, I wasn’t sure about the holes in the base either, maybe they once had weights/felt or fit into a carry case with pegs to hold the pieces in place? Either way its a nice little set, should keep me going till I acquire one or both of my dream sets, a Dubrovnik and a Mechanics institute set, reproductions if course, I’m not duck tales rich! 🤣
