Help identifying pieces .

Hi could someone tell me the name of these pieces . I want to do some research on them but I don't know how to start looking . Any help would be great Thanks .

Can anyone see the photo ? I don't see it . What I'm I doing wrong ? I can see the photo after it loads and when I hit the post green button but I can't see it after that .

Oh ok.

Its unusual but its 8x pawns in the last two rows

Then Knight, Rook, Knight, Rook.

Then finally the front line Bishop, Queen, King, Bishop

Its relatively easy to recognize because usually Pawns are the shortest, then Rook, Knight, Bishop, Queen, and finally King is the tallest.

Here Pawns seem to be as tall as Knights and the rooks are the smallest, but there is enough information to reconstruct what is what.

These pieces dont seem to be especially good though; they probably very easily fall over. Maybe they are for a chessboard that actually hangs to the wall ?

Also its probably for a language in which rooks are called elephant, because thats what the rooks look like. According to Wikipedia thats for example Hindi.

The pieces are Chinese.

Chinese don't play Western chess.

Chinese play Chinese chess.

Those pieces are made for the Western market.

They are not historical in any way, shape, or form.

It's a Chinese set, manufactured as a souvenir for tourists. They seem to be quite common. Here's a link to an ebay listing with something similar. Usually they were/are sold in a folding box that serves as the board.

Since it appears to be made out of wood and not resin or plastic, I'd guess that it's from the 70s or earlier.

I play chinese chess and international chess. I play with westerners and chinese friends. I also play senat ( ancient egyptian game) and the game of ur ( ancient sumerian game). My friends and family play many other board games.

I played it once, against a computer online somewhere.

It is the progenitor of Backgammon.

I can feel its religious origin. It is a game of passing through life.
