Home-made chess tables

Hi all, thought I would share pictures of an old round table I inherited from my grandfather, which I converted to a chess board. Perhaps others have also made chess tables they would like to show here.

My challenge was to find a solution for the pieces taken off  because of the round shape. The squares are 2mm veneer sunk into table top and squares are 50mm.

Nice work. I've made a board but haven't made a table yet but have promised one to a friend as a wedding present so I am going to pick up lumber before the end of the month.

was there glass or something where the board is currently or did you bring the level of that down for the veneer?

I brought it down using a router and a makeshift temporary jig to control the depth and to get the exact square size of the recess.

Very well made! Hope you enjoy your amazing table!

gotcha. I have a table with a beaten up leather top I may pull out and replace with a veneer board... if i can convince my wife to move her geraniums elsewhere.

I also had to remove about 3mm of the entire round table top first to clean it up - which I did using router and jig as well.
