How Many Chess Sets Do You Need?

Just the other day I considered my current inventory of sets and thought about calling The House of Staunton to buy a set, not any one specifically.

I then remembered all that I own and use.  There is no design that I do not already own so there really is none that I need.

Remember that I use all my sets for play and keep none for collecting purposes.

I have a few sets that I use for slower time controls.  There are 3 that need a 2.5” or maybe a 2.375” square.  There are 6 that do best on a 2.25” board and 3 that work best on a 2.0” board.

I then own a number of sets that work great and I one for slightly faster times like G/45 or G/60.  There are easily 14 sets in this category.

Then I own 3 wood sets which are great at G/30.  And I own 2 wood sets for blitz and skittles.

The sets are all different in style and/or wood types.  This makes it quite fun and definitely not boring when I play Chess.

But I have reached the limit at 35+ sets.  There really is nothing out there that I need to add for play.

Sure I could get by with a lot less and probably will be selling off some sets in the near future, but I am definitely having fun with it all.

There's a formula to work it out: C=X+1

where C=ideal no. of chess sets, and X=no. of chess sets owned.

Did you consciously adapt that from the well-known rule for bicycles?

I know I did.

I own several sets. Not sure on the number of sets I own. Several plastic and wooden sets. Only need one set but want tons of sets. I do rotate them for playing with. Depends upon my flavor of the month I guess.

Nordlandia

Why own dozen sets if it turn out that you have to play against yourself like in the picture.

Especially when the board is 16 x 8 and the pieces seem to be attached to each other!

Very good point, Ronbo. I agree.

Totally agree!

I only have one (budget issues) but I recommend two.

I asked my wife how many necklaces she needs. Her answer: one for every day of the year. My question is whether this standard applies to my chess sets, or to my guns.

Lordananas

I have 1.

I have thirty (30) sets.Twenty are for teaching and the rest are for playing which includes small magnetic travel sets.

I do want to buy one Wooden one but I can't find one that uses a fierce Knight and it looks magnificent. The Bishop has a wide slot and it looks great to me.

aln276

you need one set. if you have more - the rest of them are usually resting in peace in a box

Lotus960

I have 960 sets, one for each of the openings in 960Chess.

I keep them all out, ready to play at any time, so I don't have the bother of setting the pieces up each time.

😂

I have begun to get rid of my chess sets now that I'm 84 . . .

I've been giving my most of my grandchildren a set . . .

to Some students I've sold club sets with a carrying bag for $8:00 . . .

Now I only have about 15 left . . .

The only board I won't sell is my board made of butterfly wings . .

Love that board....and...you are a heck of a nice guy!

Zero if you're the World Champion. Magnus Carlsen doesn't own a chess board.

TheOneCalledMichael

Fischer ex-worldchampion had some.

nojchess

Just bought five sets last week! Nobody can't help me 🤣
