Between 95mm and 100mm Kh sets I have 20 ![]()
How many full size sets do you own?
Hey Magic, I’m not sure of the specifics but I’ll run with playable wooden pieces between say 3.5-4.5 inches. (I am excluding figural and plastic pieces, and pieces smaller or larger than above) So…. 9 … up from the 5 in lockdown but down from a peak, as I have sold off a few sets.
Wow… at last count, tournament and club size wood only — about 150, including about 40 Soviet sets, half a dozen NOJ sets, half a dozen Jaques, including an ivory, four Whittys, including two ivories, a Bob Jones ivory, a couple of Chavets, a dozen or so Lardy sets, several so-called Ayres sets, 14 or so Official Staunton, two Legend Products, and eight House of Staunton. And that’s off the top of my head. I’m sure I’ve forgotten more.
That’s not including library size sets (8-10), travel sets (70+), boards (40+), clocks(50+) or books (1000+).
Some of these are going to go on the market when the economy improves. I’ve run out of room!
one wood one, I have yet to find out what kind it is or who made it and a small plastic one I bought at Wal-Mart.

@ChessChaney, What are you looking for? If you want a tournament size Lardy I can send one your way, DM me your address.
All you other moochers, this isn’t an open offer. The first one who asked can get!
Believe me, my wife wishes I had stopped at twenty! That’s only about 19 more than you can use at the same time, unless you’re into simultaneous exhibitions. There are still a few of us serious collectors still here. And some of them make me look like a dilettante!
16 wooden sets between 3.5"-4" and 1 set that is 4.4" (Official Staunton 1849 lacquered and antiqued). I regularly use all but my 4.4" set for club play, tournament play and meet ups with friends in NYC area. I have no fancy design sets with the big hair and stuff. All of my sets are historical (Dubrovnik, 1849, Chavet) or contemporary tournament sets (Sinquefield Cup set, FIDE Championship Set).
I have 13 wood sets between 3.5” to 3.75” plus the plastic Ultimates plus the HoS 3.75" Players series promised to my friend.
Two sets, both Staunton Castle, both unweighted:
- 4.4" Piatigorsky in Ebony & Natural Boxwood
- 3.75" 1950 Dubrovnik in Stained Mahogany & Natural Boxwood
Madmac.....You're my man! Now,after showing the wife your post(#6),I may be able to pull off the Hallett set without too much pushback.
I'd like to take advantage of the current holiday discount in fear of prices rising after the new year. However,I'm a wimp and want to keep enjoying home cooking......Such a tough choice.
50/50 right now.....Place your bets folks.![]()

Moocher nr 1 here...I'd like to have a closed offer!

I'm pretty sure the price will rise like everything else soon. Dun wan to scare you but my grandma always said to me it's better to buy cheaper for the set now than to buy more expensive later.
I'm trying to quell the urge to buy my last full size tourney set, which will be number 21...The S.C. Hallett pieces. Such a nice and elegant design, but I fully realize I don't need it.I've managed to come up with one more spot in my chess/hobby room where I can squeeze it in and still keep everything in balance(except me...Ha).....Desire is a dangerous emotion.
So,I'm wondering how many sets some of you "collector folks" own?...Oh! To be clear....Full size means "not" travel sets.
Thanks in advance.
