A board with 2.25" squares is standard for a 3.75" set. The colors are strictly a personal preference. I like boxwood and ebony pieces on a mahogany and maple board.

Classic style. You won't go far wrong with those materials. I also like walnut and teak for dark squares. Rosewood can be very nice, too. I have boards in all three.
