Indecision for choosing my first chess set

Hello everyone, first post here (:
Like lots of people im seeking an advice before pulling the trigger on my first nice chess set. I've decided to go for something smaller, library size lets say.
The question that i need help with is would 1.5 inch (40mm) square size board be too small for 3  inch (76mm) king height? I know the set would look totally fine on 1.75 but i calculated the well known king base 75% of the square formula and 1.5 is more by the textbook.
So i just wanted to double check how it looks before i bring my final decision....I've seen lots of pics and examples for 1.75 SS board and 3 inch king but never really 1.5 board so if anyone uses those and could provide some photos i would be grateful. Thanks (:

PS: this would be the combo i am interested in..thoughts?

I would say this question depends upon your preference. Some like the fit tighter while others like it roomier than the normal 78%. I like more space so I prefer something less than 78%. I use my 3.5" sets with a 1.6" base on a 2.25" board a lot and I like it. That's me though. Some would think the set is too small.

Anyhow, back to you question, here is my HoS 2.875 set with a king base of 1.3" on a 1.75" square. Please excuse the dirty towels. The ratio is only 74% but I think it looks tight enough given the thickness of the stem of the pieces.

That pairing looks fine to me in terms of size. I also like the selection of pieces and board. Nice classic look.

Omg, mister buddy! You have two of those beautiful boards?

Mister Shimke, if you go to this thread you'll find what you're looking for in post #23. It's 76mm King with 30mm base on 40cm board.

Since you asked for opinion, my preference would go for 45mm board. It would be more in proportion imo.

@TheOneCalledMichael Yes. I have a 2.25" from JK Creative on Etsy and a 1.75" from the Colorado Wood Worker. I just love walnut maple boards. It doesn't matter if they are solid wood boards like the two I have or a veneered board like a DGT board. I just love them regardless.

TheOneCalledMichael

Nice! I like in particular the feet underneath the board. Hmm...

MCH818

Oh that! The black part under the board is the bottom portion of a display case. I have a cat which I believe I mentioned before, so I have display cases for my boards to protect the pieces and boards from my cat. That way I can leave the position I am studying out on the table without worry about the cat chewing on the pieces or burying them in the litter box. The case in the photo was $60 at Amazon.

TheOneCalledMichael

Aaaaahhh that's what it is! From the picture it looks like what mister Wits made for his purpleheart board. You clever man!

MCH818

Haha! I always wondered why no one asked me about the black platform under the boards. Anyhow that's what it is.

TheOneCalledMichael

That brings me on a idea, I could buy a board about 1 inch wider (or have it made) in several woods color to put my solid board on top of it. This way it looks like what mister Wits has or you happy.png Brilliant! Good stuff this.

Are those not close enough to the ratio that i would go for? They look ideal to me, as the one you linked above.
Thank you for your opinion and help I appreciate it.

Can you please share a link to your display case on Amazon? Thanks!

I just measured the base from that set and it is 31mm so basically both have the same measurement (KH 76mm and 31mm base). Thanks to the slim appearance of my set it just barely pulls off with that 40mm board.

I was thinking the Zagreb set is beefier and that's why I'm not so sure if it can pull it off on a 40mm board without giving that just a little too crowded impression. Tough call. If just somebody has that 3" Zagreb set and a 40mm board then we can be sure if it fits or not.

Unfortunately, they don't seem to be on Amazon anymore. It was a case for a book 15x15x6 from Better Display Cases. Also, I checked my Amazon purchase history and I misspoke. I paid $74.99 for it. You can still buy it from their website. It is a little more expensive now. It is $89 and can be seen at https://www.betterdisplaycases.com/products/acrylic-deluxe-clear-display-case-medium-rectangle-box-15-x-15-x-6.

You could definitely make a wood bottom and just use different borderless boards on top. No one would be able to tell.

TheOneCalledMichael

Exactly and I get to keep both side available to use when I want too. This is just brilliant. When I buy solid wood board somehow I find it a pity if one side is used for screw-in nuts or some other feet stuff. I might just as well buy a veneer board, hardly to tell the difference if it's done well.

@MCH818 sorry for being impolite, forgot to thank you on that pic, its a beatiful set, im really jealous hahah grin.png

Are you going to do this? I would love to see how it turns out.

No worries! Are you going with the 1.75" or 1.5"?

TheOneCalledMichael

Yes I surely do. Don't know where to get it though happy.png
