A simple thread with a lot of room for variety and discussion.

This set was used by Judit Polgar and Boris Spassky for an exhibition match in Budapest in 1993.  There is a video here:

I see a lot of influences from various styles in this set, but I can't put it into one category. There is a thread discussing this set in particular here: https://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-equipment/guess-this-chess-set

I have always admired Boris better than Fischer. The set is unusual but, very playable & proves Boris was not a chess equipment snob. Thanks for the nice pics.!

I'll update this thread every couple of days or so.

Former World Champion José Raúl Capablanca is seen here playing on an Austrian set commonly known as the Old Vienna or Coffee House style.  This photo was taken at the International Chess Tournament of the Austrian Chess Federation at the Grand Hotel Panhans / Semmering. September 1937.

Note the huge size of the pieces in relation to the board.  This is a common theme in historic chess photos from the 1st half of the of the 20th century.

I don't know the wood used in these sets.  I own one and I am leaning towards it not being boxwood.

I've seen fruitwood used in euro chess sets as well

GM Levon Aronian playing a simultaneous exhibition in a chess club in his home country of Armenia.

Look at all the plastic sets with a decidely eastern flair to them.

With the cross finial for the King, the lack of opposite colored bishops, and a rook without crenellations it feels to me like a combination of design elements from some of the famous Eastern sets.  Zagreb...Dubrovnik...Soviet...Staunton...the lines blur easily.
