Is my new set too big for my board?

OK so I know the "rules" but lets be honest, its a ver subjective thing. I purchased a luxury set and I didn't take into consideration the base size. I have a friend who said its "borderline" and although I am very happy, my OCD won't allow this unless I get some second opinions happy.png

So, is my new set too big for my DGT board with 55mm squares? The set is recommended for 60mm squares, and its the Empire II luxury Staunton set. I do love it though happy.png

Yes. Try a board with 2.25inch squares.

So its too big sad.png thats not what I wanted to hear!

So true. I am def happy with it thats for sure. The best set I own. Waited a while but well worth it, and well worth the glossy finish I paid extra for happy.png

Actually, a 2.25” square with this set would still be a tight fit.  If you like the more cramped fit as many Europeans seem to do, the 2.25” square would be the smallest I would go.  This gives you an 83% King base to square size difference.

The 60mm or 2.375” square would still give an 80% difference.

Most accepted percentages for tournament play are no more than 80% and usually lower.

But if you like and want it tighter that’s fine.  I personally think you will be happier with the 2.25” or 2.375” square size during play with this set.

If you like the way your set looks on your board, keep it. You may find that some opponents will object to playing on it, complaining that it is too crowded for them to see the position clearly.

LOL...I assume he's not planning to bring this set and board to tournaments.

Guys can you please send the OP a friend request?

He used to be iTrenix but had issues with his account, so opened a new one.

He has sent friend requests out to his old buddy's on his previous account but some are thinking he's pretending to be him. I can assure you he is legit.

Ha thanks for that. I still don’t know what the issue is it’s like no one believes it was me hahaha

Beautiful set! I like the squares on the tighter side. This is probably a little tighter than I’d prefer, but go for yours bro...... if you like it, go with it. Enjoy!

compensate much? jk

I think it looks great. I enjoy playing on boards with "standard" spacing and I also really enjoy playing on cramped boards with less room than this. As others have said, if you enjoy it then don't let anything stop you. grin.png

Not shapes are not my taste , but you can play with whatever you like.  Bigger pieces makes it hard to see, but what matters is that you enjoy it!

Personally, I like more room. I once returned a nice 4" set because the pawns were too large for my 2.25" board. However, this is really just a personal preference. If you like it then go with it.

The whole 4 pawns to a square and 2.25 inches square -GREEN- board is an American thing. If you are not taking this set to a tournament in USA to play its a non issue as long as you like it. Eastern European boards are often extremely cramped by us standards.

Half the soviet grand masters/world champions learned to play the game on boards like these:

Beautiful set. Beautiful board. Personally, I think they’re too cramped together.
