Is this a Jaques and Son Lasker set from 1880s?

I cannot stop looking at my new chessmen! I recently won a $10 bid on an estate auction website and picked these up today. I am trying to identify these and my search thus far has led me to believe they are Lasker series by Jaques and Son from 1880s. Unfortunately, this is an incomplete set, missing 2 pawn and a black rook. The white king is marked at the base. Kings rook and knights are marked with a crown. I am completely in love with these and have a few questions. Pictures are below:

  1. Is this an authentic Lasker set?
  2. Should I clean the pieces safely? Do you have recommendations how?
  3. Any idea of value? (No way I could part with these if #1 is true)
  4. Is it possible to get replacements for the missing pawns and rook?
  5. Do you have any tips for care and use?
  6. Any good resources to research around this?

Nice find! I don’t know much about these sets but I would be jumping for joy if I bought that for $10.

Excellent stuff. If they are of that age and authentic - great … but regardless… I think it’s great anyway - just a beautiful set for the price of a beer at the pub! What’s not to like … in fact, go shout yourself a beer at a local pub and toast the find! 👍

It looks exactly like a set I currently have for sale on eBay, which I believe to be 1880-1890. Differences are that I have a complete set but don’t have the original box, where you have the box with the label, which is really important.
What colour pawns and rook are you missing?
With regards to value, the box alone would fetch over £100 I believe. The pieces maybe £200? But have a look on eBay, my set’s auction completes tomorrow night and that will give you an idea of the current market value.
$10?! Really?! Lucky €$[]{%!! 😡

Also - don’t clean them. They might be a bit dirty but it’s “good looking” dirty, known as “patina”. They have the golden toffee colour which you want.

And another thing…the label on the box helps massively with dating Jaques sets, see https://www.britishchesssets.com/chess/registrationlabels.html

Hmm, my link doesn’t work. I’ll try again tomorrow from my laptop

Thanks IpswichMatt. That link does indeed work for me. Good notes about the patina. I am missing the Black rook and two black pawns.

I might have some spares that would go ok. I’ll have a look tomorrow to see how well they match my set (if they match my set they should match yours )

Here's a rook and some pawns. The Jaques rook and pawn are on the left. Not a great match I'm afraid.

Here's another Rook which is a better match. It's boxwood though (obviously) so it would need to be made black. This can be done with black car rattle-can spray paint, a technique which is more effective than it sounds.

Sorry about the sideways pics. I'm posting from Linux-land and can't be bothered trying to correct them.

Let me know if you're interested in any of these pieces, you can have them for the cost of the postage @manwholikestosleep

@IpswichMatt, yes, what a wonderful offer! I would absolutely take the pieces to help complete my set here. Let's converse over PM and I will send you my details. Thank you so much. The black pawns and white rook will be put to good use and I'll be adding to that 'patina'. happy.png

Ok we’ll do that. Can you post a picture of the underside of one of your pieces please and I’ll see if I can match the baize.

May I just say that I love the way Matt has been able assist Manwho in this thread. Very cool. Well done both. 👍

Thanks PowerDigit. Most posters here are fairly amicable.

@IpswichMatt, apologies for the lag. I was out of town enjoying the weather. Here are the bottoms... They appear to have slightly different colors in the set.

Ok. Would you like me to rebaize these pieces before I send them? I have some blue-green baize which might match ok
