Is this a nice chess set?

Hey guys, first post in the forum! I am looking at purchasing a chess set from craigslist... here is the ad he put up and the images to accompany it:

"1960'S CHESS SET TEAK WOOD BOARD, IVORY FIGURES! - $300

BOUGHT IN HONG KONG IN THE 1960'S DURING THE VIETNAM WAR. THE BOARD IS TEAK WOOD (I BELIEVE), AND THE PIECES ARE HAND CARVED IVORY. HALF OF THE PIECES ARE NATURAL IVORY COLOR THE OTHERS WERE DIED BROWN. THE KING STANDS 3.5" TALL. THE INSIDE OF THE CASE IS LINED WITH BLUE VELVET, WITH ELASTIC TO HOLD THE PIECES. THE ELASTIC HAS GONE BAD OVER THE YEARS AS IT NORMALLY DOES. THE BOARD HAS MINOR WEAR. MUST SELL A.S.A.P.! MAKE OFFERS.

I am looking at purchasing this set from this man and I was looking to get some feedback on whether its worth the price hes asking.

I am not skilled in chess identification, and was wondering if theres any way to figure out the truth in the claims hes making (is there a way to check the age? origin? way to check for ivory?) if everything he claims is true, is this a good deal? does anything seem fishy? is it all true but i should stay away?

Thanks to anyone that can offer some input/advice. I know only what is posted in this ad... if there is anything you think i should inquire about, please let me know!

this could be nice for decorative purposes, but not for play IMO.

I prefer standard piece design.

Well, it's simply gorgeous. I couldn't agree with Dragec more - it's not for playing with, it's for looking at. The design is way too busy for playing and the colors are in poor contrast to the board. BUT - if you're looking for something beautiful to look at, this fits the bill. One last thing - make sure it's not newer. There's  a ban on ivory.

trysts

No.

I do agree that it is beautiful. If you look at the picture of the board it looks like theres a slight crack or something in the bottom? do you think thats for folding? or is it the board just cracking? Also, Ivory was banned in 1989, so if the date of the board is true, then it should be legal... is there any way to verify the age/authenticity of the ivory?

also, if it IS ivory, i was reading that it can go anywhere from $100 - $250 per inch... if thats true, and the king himself is 3.5" (x2 kings), that would mean that the kings themselves are worth pretty much if not more than the value that he is selling the board at? either he is naive, really needs the money, or something is up with his claims...?

i dont see a forum or anything on that site... only videos. I watched a few and they didnt really seem to give me any of the answers i've been wondering about this specific set.

Not all ivory is banned. Mammoth ivory is legal.

 why?

There's not enough information to tell whether it is ivory, just that it is quite unlikely to be so.

It might be asking quite enough if it were bone, but I wouldn't keep your fingers crossed.

$300 for what might be a very plebian set of pedestrian materials? Not me, sister.

trysts, the joke missed the target. Mammoth ivory is indeed used, google it.

Well - the board looks like a folding design - with an insert in the back to put the pieces. There's nothing wrong with that (I just bought a folding wood set that I really like) - but it may take away from the "display" value. Also, the picture makes it look like the space between the two halves is uneven, but that could be an illusion.

I would be very skeptical on the "ivory"... more likely it's resin, or some other material. Whenever I cruise craigslist or ebay for chess sets - I see a lot of "crystal" and "marble" chess sets for $100 that are really "glass" or "stone" and worth about $10.

$300 seems awfully steep to me when compared to the quality of a $250 House of Staunton set and a $50 board. If you get a chance to take a look at the set in person, you might find this useful: http://www.wikihow.com/Tell-Ivory-from-Bone
