Issues with Chessbase Videos under Windows 11

Hello everyone,
I have the following problem:
On I installed the last update of Windows 11. on my notebook from Samsung Galaxy 360 only Chessbase 17, Fritz 18 and various FritzTrainer are running. No other software.
After the update, video is no longer displayed in Windows Media Player (embedded in all Chessbase products). Only audio is still available.

After my first analysis, the Codec for mp4 is new after the update.

I use the program msinfo32 to find the codecs.
The company Chessbase could not help me either, although they tried very hard.
My question to the community: Does anyone have similar experiences?
If you need more information, please let me know.
Thanks for your support in advance.

Has nobody the same problem? I use Windows 11 24H2.

The Support of microsoft said, my Notebook has no issues.

Thanks

Hi Johann,
just sharing some related experience - not the very same issue but maybe helpful?
I used to run using Win7 an old software displaying embedded video. After switching to a new PC and Win11 the video didn't display anymore. I used AVIcodec (free software) to identify the codecs used in the video file, and it did report which one was missing. Next step was finding/downloading the missing codec and install it. Then the embedded video resumed.
Another option can be testing displaying the video using VLC media player instead of Win media player; eventually make VLC the default player if this works fine. But not sure the Chessbase software would rely on the default player, maybe the Win one is called for.
Hope this helps...

Hi kiwimotard,
Firstly, thanks for the quick reply.
VLC works fine, but Chessbase requires the old media player. According to Microsoft, the media player (legacy) is no longer supported. As of Win 11 Update 24H2, it no longer works. And as already mentioned, only Chessbase runs on the notebook.
The reference to AVICodec may help. I will install it soon and follow your advice.
Good night

I had what sounds like a similar issue back when ChessBase 14 came out.

Nobody could help. It was super aggravating.

In the end, I updated my graphics card and then everything worked the way that it was supposed to.

It wouldn't hurt to give this a try, if no other solutions have worked.

As a final note, would you please post your solution here when you do find it? It will likely help others, including possibly myself. These posts are available for years to serve as a reference.

Good luck with this - I know how exasperating a problem like this can be.

It was a coincidence that I found yesterday a solution. The graphics driver was also updated during the Windows update. That was the problem. I reinstalled the graphics driver manually and everything worked again.

Media player Version 11.2504.4.0 with Windows 10, the course video won't play in Chessbase 18, Fritz 19 or Chessbase Reader 17, with an error saying please install version 9 or newer,

Johann960

Hi Rotcivsk,

my solution was clearly the graphics driver of my IRIS graphics card, although I also got the error message from the media player. See also #5 and #6.

I hope this is helpful for you too.

Greetings Johann

Thanks for your friendly reply Johann! And kudos for your post, which can be extremely useful to many other chessbase users sharing this issue triggered by various factors.thumbup

I tried your solution but it didn't work, so started to ask Grok the question grasping at straws, lol

And I finally got it work after testing a number of options by AI, that took me a few hours:

In Windows setting, search out and run 'Turn Windows Features on or off', and tick back Windows Media Player, and I disable DirectX Video Acceleration for WMP after that. Now it's working like a charm. (obviously Media Play isn't compatible here.)

Also, before brining back WMP, I did installed K-lite Codec Pack from codecguide.com, although that alone did not solve my problem.

Good to hear that it works. I also tried the Windows settings. Without success.

By the way, today I wouldn't buy any more Chessbase products or updates to higher versions. The world has moved on.

I can also perform the functions I use with LICHESS, including connecting my DGT Smartboard. And in combination on my PC with scid, bearchess and other free tools.
At this point I would like to thank joernupbde for his excellence work.

Greetings Johann

Windows created a "new" media player for Windows 11 which does not work for some older media. Try the ("old") Windows Legacy Media player, which was the media player prior to the "new" Windows 11 media player...

The link in #11 above addresses the Microsoft Legacy Media Player

Hi RussBell

My understanding and test: Chessbase works under Win11 only with the MS Legacy Media Player.
Have a nice weekend.
