Jaques of London made in India

Sort:

I understand that the new Jaques of London chess pieces are made in India. I recently purchased a new Jaques of London set and was disappointed with the way the person in India carved the knights. I can't find any knights made by Jaques from 1849 to today that look like the knights that this guy carved. Long thin neck and a small head like a camel.

I took a picture of the Jaques knight vs my House of Staunton knight. What do you think?

i like the right one best, be it house of staunton or made in india

TetsuoShima

but to be very honest even the right one could use some improvements but i guess thats just my personal taste.

EpicQueen

The current version of the Jaques knight is on the left. The House of Staunton knight on the right.

Doggy_Style

I like the one on the left. Elegant, snarling and a mad eye, all at the same time.

Just out of curiosity, what HOS set is that knight from?  HOS obviously has a ton of styles.....And yes, add me to the list that prefer the Jaques.

Nah, the one on the left just doesn't have the detail. Faster to produce, cheaper to make. So Jaques of London is going to the dogs like everything else in the world. Arf!

What, are you actually looking at what the pieces look like?

EpicQueen

Sorry I don't remember which HOS set this was called. I bought it over 10 years ago.The king is almost 3 3/4 inches. The Jaques king is 3.5.

Agree with the OP, that Knight is horrible. The other pieces look ok though.

Even on the HOS set, the base of the Knight is too small IMO - looks even smaller than the base of the pawn, or is that an illusion?

EpicQueen

The HOS knights base is larger than the pawns. It's almost the same as the bishops base.

Notice how the Jaques knight towers over the rook. The picture on their website doesnt' look like what they sent me.

Here is the Jaques website pic.

The height of the Jaques knight compared to the rook is disappointing because I've been looking at that exact set (i'm assuming you only got 2 queens with the set since they informed me that only the fischer/spassky set and up in price have 4 queens)

That said I like the JOL knight better than the HOS.

both n's look ok 2 me, but what do i no? i like hairballs!

I don't see a lot of difference, but I prefer the newer set.

EpicQueen

The set that I got had 4 queens. Product Code: 49350.

Maybe it was a mistake.

I was excited about getting this set. I like all the pieces except the knights(camels). I'm surprised that pieces arent heavier too.

Bronco

Wow that's the exact set I was checking out. Maybe the lady was misinformed.

The extra queens are included from the Fischer Spassky sets and upwards.

With kind regards

Even though I like the JOL knights they do remind me of something out of Jurassic park. Velociraptor?

Here's a pic of my Jaques of London 3,75" set, bought in 2012. The set is top notch. The wooden box is shitty however, the lid has shrunk and does not close. Not cool for a 250 pound sterling set.

I suspect Jaques quality control is faltering. That (machotime's) Jaques knight looks verry different.
