I bought a 2.25 from Colorado wood worker, Maple-Peruvian walnut. I love mine.

Thanks for the feedback.  Glad you are happy with your JLP board.

However, regarding the base price of new JLP vs Drueke boards with 2.25 inch squares...from the respective websites...

Drueke = $225

JLP = $299 (Chess House - is exclusive retailer for JLP)

 Also, since this thread was initiated, I discovered another maker of solid wood chess boards, "ColoradoWoodWorker" (Brad Borkowski) which I have since purchased from and am very pleased with, especially considering the price I paid...

the board I purchased...$129 + $30 (shipping) for the 2.25 inch squares model...

See additional discussion and the photos of the board in the following forum thread (following posts #43 and #62)...

Thanks for the info and the links.  I've seen Brad's boards; they are quite nice.  About 5 or 6 years ago I had a custom board made by rockwoodchess - purple heart and maple inset into a multi tier frame.  It's beautiful.  When I thought about acquiring a new board, I contacted rockwoodchess, but the email address was no longer in service.  I searched the web for custom board builders and ran across Brad.  I considered purchasing one, but decided I wanted one with a frame.  Not sure why because frameless boards are quite beautiful.

I also thought about the reproduction Druke's.  Pricing is competitive, but the 2.25 square boards are a bit large - that's part of what drew me to the JLP; the footprint fits my chess table better.  BTW I picked up a "garage sale" JLP board at an amazing price.  It has a few, almost imperceptible, dings on one side of the lower frame.  At the price, the JLP was hard to beat.  BTW: one other difference I forgot to mention is that the JLP board features slightly raised squares - maybe 1/8 of an inch.  On the Druke the squares and frame are completely flush.

I'll try to post some pics tomorrow.

Sounds like you were able to find a good deal on your JLP board.  That's great!

Yes there are several different variants of the JLP boards offered, including "raised" and "flush" squares.

For anyone interested, here are a few photos comparing the JLP (2.25 in sq) with my vintage Druke (2 in sq).

What is the board's wood composition (border and squares) walnut and maple, black walnut and birch or any rosewood in there? Beautiful board well crafted and nice set to accompany your new acquisition. Enjoy it for many years of competitive chess games.

Walnut and maple....based on my conversation with Raphael Neff, owner of Chess House, the JLP boards are sold exclusively by him...he pointed out that the inspiration for these boards are from the legendary Drueke boards  and assured me that the quality of the JLP boards is at least the equal of the Drueke's...
