Knights on parade

The design of the knights is what differs most between Staunton style chess sets. Here are some of my favourites.

From a Zagreb -59 set.

From a Dubrovnik (remake) and from a set marked "Staunton 6". They look fierce...

MCH818 are you sure that’s a Cooke? It looks more like a Sinquefield cup knight.

Whatever you call them MCH, they're beautiful.

Here are the knights from the budget Staunton pieces that are standard at swedish chess clubs. Quite OK. Sturdy and eminently playable. Real workhorses.

And these are the ponies from and old swedish set (as used at clubs in the 20th century). Nimble little beasts and pleasing to the eye. My eyes, at least.

Made in Sweden and almost uniformly used by swedish chess clubs 1950-2000 (circa). Swedish players of my generation grew up playing with these. Unweighted but stable due to their wide base and low point of gravity. The pieces on the picture are fairly old.

Are the knights one piece?

No.

"French" knights from a not too expensive indian set. Boxwood/Sheesam.

First were from S.C. Hallett set.

Others were from O.S.'s now unavailable Limited Ed. Antiqued 1849 Reissue set.

I believe only 20 sets were made.O.S. was amazingly nice to give me this set(sorry,I know this is a Knight thread) for 2/3 off of the regular price(one above my means at the time) since I placed an order for a much less expensive similar set on Christmas Eve....Around 6 or 7 years ago.

They were feeling the Holiday spirit and offered me this one, stating it was Christmas...Super nice folks!

No thanks. Chess.com has become an unfriendly place this year. I will live vicariously through others.

MCH818 Strange you had asked me the same question over my chess set & that's the answer I gave you . wink

Avatar of magictwanger

Understood, but I have no doubt it's a nice set & why care what the naysayers think. You bought it to please yourself.....That's all that matters.
