from what I know it is an alternative to microsoft windows people say it is good because there are not many problems/bugs with it unlike windows operating software that is full of them, but linux is harder to get software ect for so not many people use it(to my understanding anyway)
Linux

Linux is the greatest free operating system available. It used to be hard to use in its youth days (text console was the only user interface). With the advent of graphical desktop environments like KDE and GNOME (the most popular, there are also others) it is now just as easy to use and configure as Windows.
The greatest thing about Linux is its price - you can download it for free and install as many times as you wish without violating the license.
Popular software has its free equivalents for Linux which are in general as good and usable as the commercial originals. For MS Office you have Open/Libre Office which is free and handles doc, xsl, ppt and other ms formats. For Photoshop you have Gimp, for Corel there is Inkscape, for Windows Player you have SMPlayer, PostgreSQL for Oracle and so on.
Finally as a chess player you have Scid vs. PC for ChessBase or Chess Assistant and Stockfish 3 for Houdini 3 (the latter is no doubt stronger but for an amateur player there is no difference)
If you are not satisfied with the functionality of free equivalents you may try to use Wine which enables you to install and run Windows applications under Linux - of course then you have to purchase the app (unless it is free for Windows) but not the Windows itself as Wine provides an emulation. I use Babas chess interface this way and it works great on my Linux box.
If you are not an iPhone user I bet you use Linux every day - it is the base of Android OS found on majority of non-Apple smartphones.
If you are looking for a functional and efficient operating system which does not require tons of RAM and best CPU then Linux is a good choice.

Linux is a free and open source operating system, that's the short answer.
