Do you take requests?   If you could, I'd really like to see some close ups of any areas that would show any mold lines or where the mold lines would be if they are not apparent in this set.  Oh, and close ups of felt edges.

I ask because I've been considering purchasing that very set myself but at that price I would expect the quality to much surpass the quality of the HOS plastic sets.

I will gladly do some closeup pics next week when the set comes in.

Your reasoning is exactly my expectation...I'm really hoping they are a clear cut premium plastic set, given the price. All the reviews and posts I could track down on the Zukert plastic set was positive, and above expectation. Lets hope that holds true!

I'll report back!

I got the Zukert set in the mail today. I waited a full week to get it since it was going from Oregon to Geogia.

I plan to post some pictures in a bit...but initial thoughts:

-The pieces are very nice and heavy. Exactly what I was hoping for.

-This is the 1st chess set I have bought, so I didn't have anything objective to compare the sizing to...but the 4.25 are very BIG. I do not know yet if I like the size, or if it might be a little to big. I am going to see if it grows on me over the next few days.

-I do know that if I do keep it (it is a great set), I already want to get a 3.75 inch set, because the 4.25 set might be a bit big to travel with and flop down for a quick game.

That set needs a board with at least 2.375 inch squares.  It's big but within tournament standards and looks great, at least in the ad photos at the site.

I have a "Pro Tourney" set from The Chess Store which is a 3.75 inch set.  It's nice enough, good quality and attractive, but the pointy ears on the knights tend to chip off. I hate that!  I guess my favorite plastic design is the HOS 3.75 inch Collector.  I got mine years ago when Frank C. still ran the place and it's top quality.  I can't speak for current production.

But I still might like that Zukert set!

Maybe I'm crazy, but I just go ahead and take my wood chess sets and folding wooden boards with me to all kinds of places.  If they get chipped or broken, then that's life.  I don't get to play chess in public too often, and considering how enjoyable it is I prefer to play on a nicer set.

The Zukert set will definitely grow on you.  Once you get used to playing on 4" and larger sets playing on a standard size set doesn't feel substantial enough.

AME carries them.  It's called a reversed print (something like that) board.  I think they are about $5 or $6.

baddogno,

Thanks for the insight on the boards...I have never had any of the three, so that is helpful. They are all cheap, so if the silicone is a noticeable upgrade, it makes sense to pay the extre few bucks for it.

Now I'm just trying to decide between the 3.75 and 4 inch king, which will obviously affect which size board.

I just wanted to add for clarity's sake.  The Primere set sold by WSC and the Professional set sold by TCS, both as 4 1/8" King are not just similar, they are EXACTLY the same set.   The exact same set as sold by ACE and Portland as 4" quad weighted.   If you see a review of one at one site, that review applies to all sites selling those sets.  EXACTLY the same.  And the only difference between all those and the HOS Collector series plastic 4 1/8" King is in the post molding QC.  Doesn't matter what they say about them, they all come from the same molds.

I don't doubt you, but have you compared them side by side? If so who would you say has the better post molding QC? Certainly price is not a definitive gauge.

I haven't seen any folding tournament chess set yet btw I had a nice experience with chessbazaar.com and many people here are big fans of chessbazaar, In my case I chose championship set from chessbazaar or from ebay. Sometimes chess collectors name the tournament set a "tournament club" set, sometimes they call it the "championship" set and sometimes the "german knight" set, sometimes something else.

This is the set From chessbazaar. Just check it out by yourself.

It is the fact that a full tournament-sized Chess set always features a 3.75" King. & if you want portability use the simple vinyl roll-up board.
