It's pretty bad when your cat can put you in zugzwang! The game is actually Sefc-Petrosian, European Team Championships in Vienna, 1957. Petrosian strangled him..

Sorry to hear about your cat, Robert. Tell us about that gorgeous board!

Yay! Congrats!

this week's setup:

Club-size HoS Nottingham on a custom 2.5" board...

Nipplewise

My set matches my chess prowess. I've put it to good use painting a chalkboard on the other side for when my eyesight fails me.

Frank, nice board. Is that one from Bill Nelson? Last time I spoke with him he thanked me for the referral.

Yes. Thanks indeed for your recommendation. I copied your board wood combo... :)

Bill is great, I'm very happy with the board and will be ordering another one from him.

For anyone reading this interested in a custom hardwood board - I highly recommend Bill Nelson. He can be found here: https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/BillsWoodPile

Great set up Frank! Thanks for posting and the recommendation.

Mr-Endron

I just took reciept of this HOS professional series today, and I have to say I'm rather impressed. The pawns are a bit light, but the set still has a phenomenal balance to it regardless.

I second that recommendation. I have three custom boards from Bill, a 2", 2-1/8", and 2-1/2", all without frames, and I'm very pleased with all of them.

My only regret is that I ordered a board from someone else while Bill was on vaction, and the board I received just wasn't up to BIll's standards. I had to spend hours resanding and refinishing it just to bring it to an "acceptable" condition. Although the board's still warped (slightly), the builder was kind enough to refund half the purchase price.

Bronco

What is the turn around time for getting a board from him?

Bronco

Thank you rcmacmillan, that's not bad at all. I'm sure it fluctuates with his work load and such. Very clean and nice looking boards indeed.

The pieces I have had for many years... King stand 3 3/4 inches, 1 3/4 inch base, weight is 95 grams.  The set is Boxwood and Ebonized Boxwood.  All the pieces have wide bases and the total weight of the set (no extra queens) is 1650 grams.

This is a similar set:

The board I made myself from Birch Plywood.  The board splits in two for transportation and storage and is held together with magnets when playing.  The board measures 20x20 inches and the squares are 2 ¼ inces.

The board is one of a kind.

How did you make the squares so perfect and the lines so clean?  It looks very good.
