My second chess clock

There´s absolutely nothing wrong with my 50 years old Garde mechanical chess clock. And what a fine clock it is! And how easy it is to "program"... But one cannot program it for "increments" or "delay" so I´ve now bought a DGT 2500. I doubt it will be around 50 years from now but neither will I. And I´ll probably use my trusty old Garde most of the time.

Congrats! Which Garde do you have?

??? Were there more than one model in 1972?

How often did you see your clockmaker during the last 50 years with your Garde? And, as not everybody is up to your standards- like knowing the release histories of all clock brands- why not give us a photo of the beautiful old lady? When she woke up, I mean.

You made me think for a moment I had it wrong. My memory just isn’t what it use to be. I checked Igor’s site and there were indeed two models. See Theil / UMF / Ruhla at https://www.chess-clocks.at/. Both had the Garde name on it. The first was a dark brown one with the light colored strip of wood from the 60s. See https://www.chess-clocks.at/Images/Thiel/Ruhla1_2_2000.jpg. I have this one, and I assume you could have bought this used in the early 70s. There was also the second gen from the 70s where it was all one color. See https://www.chess-clocks.at/Images/Thiel/Ruhla2_2_2000.jpg. I think the 2nd gen was used in the 72 Fischer Spassky match.

Mine is the model used in Reykjavik.

Nice! I really like that one as well. 50 consecutive years... what a record.

Well, it´s a quality clock.

Here’s my one and only clock. Not 50 years old but made in Germany. I find the gray (plastic?) surrounds on each clock rather odd and quirky but it’s works a treat and solid as a rock.

Like Herman, I hope to get a digital clock too, one day. I’ve forgotten the make but I like that two sided clock recently released.

If someone reading here now or later is interested in acquiring one of the 70ies models you can pm me. I also have some of the 90ies made 3rd generation clocks (as in powerdigits photo)

I consider the Garde an icon. It can be seen on countless photos from great matches and it´s still useable.

However I suspect that the DGT 2500 also may become iconic. It´s the official chess clock of FIDE and it´s design and functionality are spot on.

Yes it looks great without a doubt.

A smart design feature is that the codes to the many preset modes, actually all the information needed to operate the thing, are printed on the bottom of the clock!

I have the DGT 3000. I thought the same thing when I first bought the clock. I really appreciated all of the presets listed on the bottom of the clock.
