Neat!
My swell chess set
Wow - that's supurb!
Any issues storing the board, as it looks like one solid piece?
NO, because it's sitting on a custom-made chess table that is "dedicated" to either the chess board or some other game (cards, Othello, checkers backgammon, etc) in which case the top of the table swings up to access the storage space underneath.
I don't mind people raining on my adulation parade, it's happened before :=)
The K & Q DO NOT take up the entire sq, they both have an admittedly stingy 1/4" of free space at their bases.
This may sound like BS but I was happy with the set & bd when I bought it and I still am. I do realize that other folks may not be if the pieces appear too big for the bd. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder - unless you happen to be Quasimodo or Frankenstein's Monster I suppose.
Maybe I'll bug my pal with the camera to take a few more pix inc an overhead shot of the entire bd with all the pieces set up and a sideways shot of all the pieces lined up ready to start a game. And maybe I'll post pix of my custom built chess table that the mismatched bd & set sit on.
Sorry about that unfortunate turn of phrase, NimzoRoy. I do tend to get a little carried away with my posts (and in love with my own silly rhetoric). Aesthetics are absolutely in the eye of the beholder, and if you're happy with your board, then that's all that matters.
baddogno thanks for the clarification but I'm not overly thin-skinned and wasn't offended by your initial post. You should see some of the other stuff people at chess.com have written to me or about me!
My contention to any nay sayers is, show me a man made thing that doesn't have some sort of characteristic that someone doesn't like....that's why I let it go...
@FirebrandX: I'm keeping the bd and the pieces but I understand that they wouldn't work for you, I also like Drueke boards although mine hails from Spain. Nothing wrong with being OCD about anything that's important to you, and chess equipment should be important to everyone here!
Indeed, a gorgeous set and board! I'd have to agree with a few here that the squares are a tad too small for the size of your pieces, tho. I once heard from a master that one way of checking the 'pieces-to-squares' ratio is to put 4 pawns on one square. If (the 4 pawns) fit inside of the square without going out of the square's sides/corners ... it's a good fit. Maybe this tip will help on other sets, etc. Happy Checkmating!

Come on, we're not talking about some sort of abstract aesthetic here, so your point is a bit disingenuous. If the board were slightly larger to match the piece size (something that has always been the norm in Staunton set & board design), it would be perfectly fine in terms of general standards. Now if after that, someone didn't like the wood grain, then you could make the abstract aesthetics point.
Perfection certainly is in the eye of the beholder...
on a lighter note...
I noticed that I have never seen a perfectly symmetrical flower, yet they are awesome to look at...but they aren't man made...why the hell do we try to be so perfect anyway...it drives me crazier than not being perfect in the first place...
LOL ... that needed posting!
Nimzo, can you post a pic of the board w/ pieces in play? Like a dozen or more moves into the game, where nothing has been taken yet. That would address the real concern, which is still purely subjective, as to whether people are comfortable with the look and feel of the dimensions.
Personally, I think it looks fantastic; I'm totally jealous! But ... I do appreciate the perspective that pieces need ample space, thus curious about pictures of the board in play :)
Well if nothing else I learned what IMFAO means
DalaiLuke when I take some more pix of the set and table I'll also take a pic of the set "in action" as you suggested, assuming I can take a decent overhead shot of the entire bd in one shot
that's a gorgeous set .. very nice 'thick, meaty' knights too ...
and 5 lbs!!! wow ... that's awesome ... for me, weight is nearly as attractive as looks ... i love a heavy set ... i have a plastic tourney-type set. staunton, that is 4 lbs and love it ... you really feeling like you're 'attacking' lol ...
actually, i to would like to know the seller as well ... it's a gorgeous set, the white pieces just 'glow' :)
and nameno1had makes a good point that the border inlay is a very nice feature ... really sets off the board edges nicely
a fine purchase
I'll be in the market for a really great chess set in September...this beautiful set has taken me over the edge.
