Need help deciding which Chessnut board I should get

Pretty much the title. I'm new to chess - I know how to play, just haven't decided to really get into it and improve until now. I want an e-board to train/improve and play players online, mainly since I live in a rural area and don't have many people close to me to play with. From looking at the Chessnut site and a few reviews on YouTube, I like the features of the Evo. However, I don't like that the pieces are plastic (some have said they feel cheap, but I guess that's subjective) and I will take it with me whenever I travel. I don't travel often, but it would be a 3+ hour drive and in the future possible air travel as well. The travel has me second guessing whether one of the other boards would be better suited for me. Just not sure I like the idea of having to use my phone along with it. I'd rather have something that's more of a "all in one" solution. Any advice/recommendation is greatly appreciated.

I'm using as of today (as in one of the other threads mentioned) "Go" model by "Chessnut". Plastic-magnetic pieces, reminiscence of the old magnetic-travel boards but for the 21th century. Limitless. I choose plastic on purpose. Namely, "the beauty" of the pieces could just distract one from the main ideas of the game. But this is zen in every way. There are many presentations of the same model across the "youtube". Almost forgot, you should get the double better price, just the original one of 150$, even less by using coupon codes. Really all-in-one and the only superior feature by the "evo", "chessvision", could be easily implemented if isn't already, because in their newest version of the app I saw that option. Cheers!

With the app (haven't used it), can I have it search for the game and then lock my screen? I want to be able to focus on the board and not have to keep looking at my phone screen. Just curious if having to use the phone versus using the screen on the Evo is more cumbersome and tedious with the other boards. And I'd prefer something wooden (like down the line, I'd grab the wooden pieces for the Evo) since I don't care for the default plastic.

Do I lose anything going with the Go/Air/Air+/Pro over the Evo?

nik1111

You are losing (maybe), "chessvision" feature: "evo" automatically detects chess position from any site, youtube video etc., then, it color squares with colors specific for the given piece, so you could more easily set-up the position.

P.S.: Yes, you could lock-in screen with iphone version of the "Chessnut" app, screen is turned off and the app running in the background.

On the android version of the same, you could dim screen, only time controls to be visible.

I just went back to iPhone recently so that would be fine. How does the quality board/piece wise compare between the Evo and the other boards? I know the Pro is the closest price wise to the Evo, so I'm guessing with similar pricing, the quality is great?

nik1111

Quality, in the terms of hand-crafted wood is great but pieces are ugly (pro). Then, there's big unused wooden margin around the play area. The whole board is unnecessary big (in that regard, more tastefull is Air+ but its pieces are also ugly.).

The best solution would be pieces as "Air's" but wooden.

nik1111

P.S.: They should release in the future board named "move", self-moving pieces. Until then, for home "evo" (I don't have one) and for on the go, "go".

But they would nailed it with the board exactly, exactly like their firstborn "Air" but wooden.

P.P.S.: If you don't like the pieces, you could order just chips from them and inbuild it into the pieces of your choosing...

...which will best suit for your future "evo". You could order wooden pieces from them which will best suit the "evo" board.

SourPatchBruhs

Is it as simple as putting the chips into the bottom of pieces? Don't want to have to drill into pieces or anything

OutOfCheese

Well... the chips need to go somewhere, they're not flat

https://www.chessnutech.com/products/separate-chips

Some places let you order pieces with the space required to put the chips in.

Ended up pulling the string on the Evo and got the carrying bag so fingers crossed

nik1111

You are receiving it, be sure. As I read from "Reddit" and other forums there are rare occurrences somebody got it late. But big percentage who got it on time does not post about their experience with receiving the order, because they don't need (received on time).

Try to think on something else while not arrive, don't make my mistake. Or days would seem like months (pure psychology).

martinbchess

I got mine from Amazon UK, arrived a few days later.

superb machine, loving it.

Not really worried about not getting it. Was more so crossing my fingers that I made the right call on getting the Evo vs the others

The Evo is a good piece of kit. I like mine a lot. All-in-one, can use with the included engines, can make your own (although that is a bit clunky to do), and works on most websites. I have used it with my cell phone as the tether for internet and also in several hotels.

A bit large to carry around. I have taken it on trips where I have driven, but I cannot see carrying it on a plane or even out to chess club. It is quite unwieldy and a bit heavy.

Make sure you keep it updated and look through the forums here and on YouTube for some tips and tricks.

What do you use to carry it in? The Chessnut bag for it or something else? And I don't travel a lot really. It would be short distances to someone's house or when I see family it's like a 4 hour drive. If I really got to the point where I was traveling a lot, I'd just get a air+ at that point to really travel with. I mainly only travel the longer drives at the holidays.

And any recommendations/links for tips and tricks? I'm guessing setting the websites and such up is pretty easy? And with me being a newer player, do I honestly dive in by playing people or should I do like the chess.com lessons and such?

Rsava

I have the Chessnut bag. Not great but a decent enough bag. I got it as a bundle in the priginal Kickstarter launch.

Do lessons but play people as much as possible.

Bots are good for occasional games, or to play when you can't get a game, but nothing beats playing people.

I don't have any links for tips and tricks, just remember seeing some things as I watched videos and read things like here and on Reddit.

Is there a different bag that you’ve seen that you’d recommend? I ordered the Chessnut bag but want to make sure it protects it since I’ll store it in that when I’m not playing

Rsava

I have not looked at/for other bags as I got the Chessnut one, and it is fine for light travel and storage.

I have put the Evo and my Air in the bag on one trip and it held it all fine.
