Love your Oleg set btw.
Here is my Soviet upright set from the 30s.
House of Staunton is offering 20% sitewide right now! I just used code Christmas20 and got the discount on an incredible hand crafted Pyrenees set from Val Gardena Italy!! They also have a TON of new products they are introducing in their CHESSMAS category. Great time to check it out to get a great deal right before the Holidays!
Well, I'm rooting for Magnus but I'll throw some good will and vibes towards Nepo as I would like to see the tourney last longer ...
One of my Soviet era mid 60s or 70s sets. I enjoy it for the simplicity and the historical value. I Have 3 total that look similar, this is not the one that has a re-attached bishops top (seller told me about it before buying) so there is no (totally fabricated) story associated with it. That will be for another day.
@Pawnerai - an excellent thread to start! A bummer that I cannot play on this field….maybe I need another set 😳 ….but this will be eye candy and your raging knight Raikis set is magnificent!
And I think Tolkien may be nodding in approval from whatever ethereal plane he is on… lovely and inspiring prose indeed!
I cannot play in this field either as I don't have any soviet set. I agre about that Nepo is needed of a little impulse to make the match a bit longer soooo...maybe with this knight that comes directly from Rohirrim people he could do something....
@jakmater Holeesmokes is that a one-piece Knight carving? I think I see a tiny bit of Soviet vibe in the overall shape of the Knight. That counts! If that Knight doesn't get the Nepo juices flowing for the next game on Friday, I don't know what will! Hah! Keep up the fantastic work.
PS. Can I trouble you for a straight, head-on shot of the front?
Thanks guys, I will consider it as a soviet knight now. @Pawnerai, it is not a one-piece knight, it is two pieces and if you check the base you will notice that is inspired in your Raikislai set! I love these bases as the entire set of course, in fact, I started this agressive and exagerated shaped knight when I first saw the fabulous Raikislai!.
Down 6.5 - 3.5, Nepomniachtchi needs some urgent CB&E forum inspiration during the rest day before Game 11 in his quest for the 2021 World Chess Championship in Dubai. Although I am a fan of Magnus Carlsen, I am first and foremost a fan of exciting competitive chess.
CB&E folks, please post your one favorite Russian/Soviet chess set in the hopes of inspiring Nepo to not give up in spite of seemingly insurmountable odds.
I'll start it off with my Oleg Raikis set.
With apologies to J.R.R. Tolkien:
Nepomniachtchi, I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the courage of GMs fail, when GMs forsake their friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day. An hour of wolves and shattered shields, when the age of GMs comes crashing down. But it is NOT this day! This day we PLAY! By all that you hold dear on this good Earth, I bid you play, Nepomniachtchi! ... for Frodo.
