New in box Drueke no. 35-H

Hey everyone,

Last week we had a very nice lady that bought her husband this Drueke 35-H in 1991 come in to donate it back to us.  Turns out her husband never opened the box and used the old one he had till he died.

This has been sitting on the shelf in the closet for the last 31 years here in Rochester.  We cut the bags open to make sure there was no mold or nastiness.  We also wanted to check the felts to make sure they had not degraded (they did not).

She even gave us the leather piece bag from Chess Era.  It is model #2001.  We did not open this bag.

If any of you are looking for a true untouched original Drueke in the box...this is the one for you.  PM me with offers.
Would love to add it to the collection...but I like to play with the pieces.  Figure it will be better off out of my hands in with a collection.

thanks

In my opinion, the very best set for seeing the position clearly.  Aesthetically perfect.  Amazing to see one still brand new in box.

An older guy at our chess club has one. Thought it looked kind of dorky the first time I played him. But they are actually great sets and very easy to play with. I wish they still made them.

Very nice, the boxes mine came in were a bit different. The only time I ever had seller's remorse.

But needed the money at the time.

BTW the new ones that are being made IN MY OPINION do not hold a candle to the older ones, and you can sure tell the difference, just like the boards. They are nice as a stand-alone if you do not compare so I do think the new ones have merit and are an option. I do like slid plastic as the new ones are, but nothing like the ones from the 70s.80s, and 90s.  Why the Carrom company, who bought them out, dropped all chess products is beyond me. Obviously did not have anyone who played or collected chess sets that made decisions. They even dropped their last product the magnetic set years ago.

It's amazing what is still laying around out there. That's an awesome find.

What do you mean the new ones being made? I know ChessUSA had some that were nearly identical but the quality was terrible. I bought a set and the bottom felts were all peeling up or put on wrinkled.

I don't know what sets @TundraMike is referring to but for a time, Bill Drueke had been personally remaking these sets by hand, painstakingly one piece at a time, using rubber molds. His website currently shows no chess product. Only wood plaques bearing bible verses.

If he is talking about the Bill Drueke remakes, the ones in the rubber moulds, I agree, they were really bad. They had air bubble voids on the edges, loss of detail from incomplete filling of the mould, etc. I ended up throwing the whole set in the trash can a few months later, just had no use for them, and considered the cash loss a donation. I know that he was given tons of bad feedback, was taking sets back, and now it seems, stopped trying.
