This will look a bit crowded on a 2.25 inch square standard vinyl board. Have to buy a 2 3/4 square board which tend to be a bit hard to find sometimes in the color you want.

I am of the opposite opinion and think sets of this size look better on a standard board than the basic tournament sets which seem too small for the squares and more suited to 2" boards.

This set has been around for aproximatley 20 years or so.  It is not an HOS exlusive and is also sold under differnt names such as "Stately Knight" and Executive.

Wholesale has it for a dollar less.

TCS even has it for less than 15 bucks!

Where as Chesshouse is quite proud of it and thinks it's worth a whopping $25!

Though it is not outstanding quality, it is a good value for under $20.  I've never owned one but know some one who does and I've played a few games with it. I think it's much better looking than the standard ever popular club set.  Durability is about the same as the weighted club set, pieces will chip and weights will come loose, but you can replace it easily enough b/c it's usually less than $20.

Wholesale Chess sells the same set. Was on sale for $9.99 before Christmas, plus S&H is cheaper with WSC

Regarding board square size.  My view is that any square size which is anywhere from 1/8 to 1/4 inch larger than the King base diameter tends to accomodate all the pieces nicely and looks right (I prefer the 1/4 inch number myself).

So....looking at the HOS webpage ad for the pieces and reading the "Description" and the "Product Details" one can see that two different values are indicated for King base diameter (I emailed HOS yesterday about this discrepancy).

The numbers for King base diameter are listed on the webpage as follows:

"Description" = 1.625 inches

"Product Details" = 1.75 inches

Using the largest diameter of 1.75 inches and adding 1/4 inch to that, gives 1.75 + 0.25 = 2.0 inch

So in my view, a board square size of 2.0 inch will work just fine.

If you prefer a larger square size, so be it.

I got that set several years ago from WholeSaleChess. I ended up giving it away because the weights and felt fell off multiple pieces within several months of infrequent use. You'll also probably find that it does feel crowded on a 2.25' square board.

Checking a few of the links provided above, I see that both ChessHouse and TheChessStore give a King base diameter of 1.625 inch for this set.

My square size calculation now becomes

1.625 + 0.25 = 1.875 inch = 1 7/8 inch.

So again, a board square size of slightly larger, say 2.0 inch, would work nicely in my view.

$15 on TheChessStore...

I never bought that set because of the many comments like this one.  It's a nice looking set, but even $15 is too much if the weights easily and routinely come loose (IMO).

At this price point, I would opt for the weighted "Deluxe Club" from TCS ---->> DELUXE CLUB WEIGHTED PLASTIC CHESS SET

It's less than $20 shipped, of good quality and not too big for standard boards.

I bought this set from Wholesale Chess a few years back and was disappointed with the quality control (or lack of). Several of the pieces had weights sticking partly out of the bottom and would not sit evenly.. WC was very accomodating with replacing them and their customer service was outstanding.. I think it was a manufacturer's problem.. I bought the Reykjavek from HOS and thought it a much better set for about the same price.

I too bought this set from Wholesale Chess dot com, and it arrived with a couple of pieces unplayable due to the weights sticking at a strange angle under the bottom so that they wouldn't sit correctly. A call to the company set things right; they sent replacement pieces that work perfectly. I really enjoy the set. It came with a board that has 2.25" squares, and they work beautifully on it. It isn't crowded at all.

A plastic chess. Maybe a HOS. I do not like it so much, but i don't know why. Is beautifull but....

Well in general, unless you are playing blitz, self respect demands you play on a wood set. A nice set of German Knights 3.75 like they use in most FIDE Championships should be less than $90.

I like the shape. Very turn of the (20th) Century. But pure white sets bother my eyes to play with (read stare at Cool ). I prefer beige.
