NOJ 1961 TAL Red Stained set....just arrived and inspected.....PHENOMENAL!

I hope I don't get flamed for posting about my new set,as some folks may feel it's an advertisement for NOJ(which it is definitely not).

I have lusted for an NOJ set for quite a while, knowing full well of the company's reputation and it's expensive, ultra high quality pieces and I did go through the  the experiences of buying quite a few sets from other vendors(the usual suspects) and had my issues, but all were resolved to my complete satisfaction.

I any event virtually all levels of this particular NOj buying experience, from communications,to purchase,to the way the set was shipped and the "super classy" storage box that the set came in(eliminating any need for another box/coffer thank God(I have enough of them and really did not want to spend anymore money....The wife acceptance factor you know...Ha) has been virtually first rate!

OK,the pieces......Beyond perfection!! Like an expensive figurine in craftsmanship/fit and finish. The new photos on the NOJ site give a nice impression of the apparent quality, but seeing how this set is packed and opening it up is an experience that your endorphins will love.

I normally hate opening up and inspecting a new set, because it's time consuming and often one finds little imperfections....Not here! It was a pleasure and as I happily inspected each piece I knew I'd find not a hint of a mark/smudge/ding.......Cracks? This company laughs at the thought!

I used to rationalize how these pieces were a bit overpriced....Not anymore.

PHENOMENAL!

Btw,the two inscribed wood pens that were included as a gift were most appreciated and a nice touch.I should have mentioned that...sorry.

Again well done. A set to treasure.  happy.png

Welcome to the club.

You now see why those of us that have bought a Noj set claim that there are none that compare.

If you can provide some pictures, that would be great.

magictwanger

I wish i could provide pictures, but I still have the "Old-Guy" flip phone and am pathetically inept....Like my chess game.-happy.png

You know what I'm talking  about anyway,I'm sure.Super/classy company and flawless products, which are well deserving of the reputation.

I'll add that I just redid my hobby room(the wife gifted me the second bedroom as my man-ish cave) and I've placed all my coffers and chess boxes on the shelves which sit above the computer desk.

I decided to dedicate the room to chess and bought a nice two shelf coffee table and a 26x26x10 inch acrylic dust cover to house a board and set. This will allow me to rotate sets around once every week or so,based on how I feel.

I bought a framed piece of chess art(Called The Game) and placed that above the wall, where the coffee table sits.....Looks fantastic.....I hope I'm done with already owning 19 sets, but that number would seem much better if it were 20! YUK!

Thought about it,but did all of that in the late sixties.

Congrats @magictwanger - I am sure the set will bring you much joy in the future.

And congrats on your "man-ish cave", waiting for the sons to move out to reclaim one of the back bedrooms for mine.

Love the idea of the acrylic cover. I realize you only have the flip phone but I would also enjoy pics of both the set and your cave.

It's a great set. I would love some pictures as well. They've been posted elsewhere on this forum already but it's always nice seeing people's setups. Don't worry about the lost prostitutes and blow. You can always make more money.

Magictwanger, go grab a kid off the street and have him take and post the pictures for you if you have to, but figure out how to show us some pictures!

And now go do you want you know you want to, buy that Edinburgh set!  What's another 72 bucks at this point?

I'll help out magictwanger with a website picture of the 61 Tal set:

Congratulations. The red stain looks beautiful I'll probably get a Minceta in that colour next year.

How come you got two pens? I only received one.

Bamboo58

Great colour. Looks like bud rosewood colour.

The 2 pen thing was a nice touch and came as a nice surprise, though not necessary . Greatly appreciated though!

Gregor had asked me for my wife's name and wished to make her a pen with her name inscribed.

Since my wife was my business book keeper for 35 years and the fact that I owned(sold 18 months ago...whew) a print/graphic/marketing business,we got many pens for free. These were from vendors who wanted us to sell their products. So,when I asked her if she'd like the NOJ pen,she asked if it could be inscribed with my son's name and title instead. He's an infectious disease specialist(can't do a damn thing for me,unless I get Ebola).

Gregor is such a nice guy that he decided to do one for her and one for my son! Very classy gesture, imo.

The Tal set remains at the top of my collection.NOJ is a class company. They deserve the accolades they have received.

Btw,the NOJ pens are far nicer than any pen I had received from virtually any vendor in the 35 years I owned my business....Really!

...and still no pics.

maik1988

Yes, no pictures yet. Indeed, this reminds me of those people who, when asked whether they know the time, simply answer yes, they do, and then walk away. Get organised magictwanger! wink.png No points for pictureless threads.

That Pawn is so cute.

magictwanger

OK,I will attempt to post some photos later in the week....Possibly on another thread, where i can cover a few sets and my chess/hobby room......Sheesh! Don't flame me for being enthused!
