Novice with 4 books, looking for Opening

Sort:
defragc

I currently have (and am reading) four chess books:

  • Idiot's Guide to Chess
  • Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess
  • Tao of Chess
  • Chess Player's Bible

As still a novice, what book recommendations are there for opening theory?

Thanks.

It would be advisable to add a tactics book or three to your collection. Once you get a good feel of how the pieces and pawns coordinate (and that is where your tactical training comes in), then you may move on to theory to find the best pawn formation and piece development suited to your style of play. Otherwise, no matter what opening you use, without tactical understanding, it will be useless.

Fundamental Chess Openings, by Paul van der Sterren. It's outstanding, it's full of text instead of just tables of analysis, and it covers all the openings. You won't need another opening book for years.
