ut there are a number of factors that go into wood quality, such as the way it is cut (e.g., quarter-sawn which is the most stable cut but also the most expensive because it results in quite a bit of wastage (which means lower yield which means higher price is required)) and age (the longer wood is aged the more stable it is, and obviously there is a cost associated with this; I've read that violin makers, for example, will only use wood that is aged a minimum of ten years). Oleg uses very high quality materials and he shared some of his costs with me; the boxwood he uses is very expensive. On a related note, Oleg offers african blackwood for dark pieces, which is 4x the cost of his boxwood (most likely just because it is very scarce and highly sought after); mammoth tusk etc. is many multiples the cost of either wood.

Hopefully one day soon we will be able to bring back mammoths from extinction through genetic engineering and then we can harvest their ivory and make chess sets.

That's a joke, by the way! Any kids reading this- kids, please don't bring bring back mammoths from extinction through genetic engineering and then harvest their ivory for chess sets.

hahaha, this may be doable too...there are probably at least a few frozen mammoths still out there having a snooze in Siberia

Yes I saw a documentary about it a while back. There is something particularly distasteful about the idea of bringing back an extinct animal and then exploiting it. Imagine if they found that Dodos laid better eggs than chickens - dodo farms everywhere...

I definitely love that set,but find it somewhat ironic that some folks consistently knocked NOJ for their prices.

Imo,both are worth it if you have the money.

As you know, I'm a Noj man lol; originally, I actually contacted Noj first about creating a Staunton set for me, however, they were not/are not making Staunton-pattern sets at that point/this point in time (if they were, I'd buy one in a heart-beat!); this is when I began searching for a Staunton to add to my collection (as I did not have one) and found Oleg's Staunton/commissioned one. In regards to the "price versus quality" debates pervasive in this forum, I've long-since stepped aside.

Me too.

Each to there own taste ! As a rule I am not into modern day remakes or rendition of such .

In the case of Oleg's Staunton this really is a nice chess set with 500 euros knock of the asking price . wink.png

With all this "lively debate" currently over $30-45 plastic sets and $150 wood sets, it's interesting to see NOJ quietly rack up a year-long waitlist for their $700 sets and this $1200 set gets quietly snapped up in a blink of an eye.

FYI: the dubrovnikchessmen site has taken down their listed prices. Instead of prices, there's an updated note on the site now from NOJ about the April 2022 waitlist. Wow!

It's certainly wild out there right now; a board maker I was speaking with a while back said his sales are up 1000%. It's pretty easy to see most websites being cleaned out; most are very low stock or completely sold out.

I still think the uptick in sales is more from folks being stuck inside, though The Queen's Gambit had a nice impact too.

It's great that chess has gotten so much more exposure.Rather than looking like a dweeb,my friends and family think I am a pro, just for being into the game.

Little do they know I suck.

Well for goodness sake don't tell them! Bask in the glory for as long as possible.

I am taking this opportunity to sell most of my old sets. Anything that goes up this fast will come down again, IMO.

Matt, how much do you ask for your cricket batt? That one I can afford.

At some point the market will get flooded with 2nd hand chess sets , when people find it take a life time to learn & master chess , with so much hard work to learn study & play . In a age of instant gratification wink.png

I'm surprised we don't see more Walrus Tusk Chess sets.

I know that Walrus Tusk Ivory is legally harvested in the US and Russia by indigenous peoples.

And that they have a long carving tradition; mostly targeted towards tourists.

I've seen pics of various figurine style sets when they have made them - but IMHO the bread and butter would really be in traditional staunton style sets.

I just don't think that they are aware of the potential market.

Just curious what is aged box wood is it dried for so many years before it’s considered aged?
