Plastic, not fantastic …

Good to see👍… your packaging/storage is more refined than my set rolling around in a cheap cardboard box… indeed it looks like your whole set is nicer. I should clarify too… nothing in my set indicates any formal link to Lardy … I just think they look Lardy’ish🙏

Mi Alegría, Algara, México. A very peculiar model that recreates the movements of the pieces.

That’s a wonderful set!! Thanks for posting. 👍

I would love any background on this set. I think it’s fantastic. My preferred size too - around size 3 or 4. I’ll measure it when I get a chance. The knight is a highlight - so too the colour of the light pieces … a caramel delight! They are lightly weighted too. Purchased off a wonderful, elderly lady who is downsizing her deceased Father’s collection. It seems an older set but I really don’t know? Any insights greatly appreciated as always.

Spanish. 70ies or 60ies? Very popular design, in all qualities of plastic, it seems. Most often in smaller sizes, but I've seen Spanish size 7, tournament pieces once. You have found a very nice set happy.png

Looks like Spanish to me, very similar to wooden Escardibul sets. And @ungewichtet beat me to it 🙂

I love this forum - thanks folks. Definitely Spanish / indeed, I had seen that Spanish thread previously but didn’t make the connection … I’ve stumbled on a gem. Or whatever a plastic gem should be called. 😉

Not quite as beautiful as yours. But it's all about the kiddo knights jumping around among the other small and elegant pieces.

A fantastic gem?

I’m taking this ‘fantastic gem’ to the pub next time I go and play. 👍

Do you have one of those spanish cigarette ember proof boards to go with it? I guess smoking is banned at pubs even in your part of the world but it would still be cool...

I prefer the Spanish set above but I picked this up as a local find yesterday. It was AUD 25 dollars (circa USD17) with a silicon board. I said in an another thread I’m surprised how good this looks on my wooden board and it’s great to play.
I believe this goes by the brand of Best Chest Set Ever … not quite … but ok for $20 bucks and quite enjoyable … if not best ever! That said, I am not a fan of the rubber (silicone?) board it came with … seems to be a magnet for dust and dirt.

In my opinion only …three fantastic plastic sets … with apologies to the ‘Ultimates’ which I imagine would be on this list if I owned them.

A Bakelite set below.

The Ecliptic in ABS plastic below.

The Best Chess Set Ever brand below (Not be confused with the Best Chessmen Ever.)

With another apology to the little Spanish set I noted 11 days ago … I love that one too!

the sad thing, I think, is that there seems to be more experimentation in plastic set designs than there is with the wooden sets.

On the upside - perhaps with ever increasing tech advances - there may be even more creativity on the horizon. That’s my hope anyway - I really enjoy an array of designs that span an array of uses. Continuing to explore and evolve the form and function of chess pieces is an exciting pastime, I reckon.

Had plastic been around when man started making chesspieces I doubt there would be any wooden ones. Plastic is simply a superior material.

The cool thing nowadays is that, with a 3d printer, you could print all sorts of designs. With a hollow base you weight them and even add sensors for some electronic chessboards. There are a number of sets available to print for free or you can pay for the design file.

Additionally, you could even paint them and add interesting effects, such aging or even rust.

The pieces are as good as pieces get but silicone boards are more or less useless. I bought the 4x weighted version but, replaced the board with a mousepad one.

If you were to sell the STL files online, such as on Myminifactory, I would buy them. I bet you would find a lot of buyers. Your designs are very cool.

@Stockfishdot1 - thanks for the note. This is not my work, rather that if a gentleman called Conor O’Kane his designs are available here: https://conorokane.gumroad.com

While I have not tried it myself - 3D printing is a brave new world that I am yet to step into - I believe that’s where you can download the files you need to 3D print the pieces yourself. My apologies in advance if I am wrong and have sent you up the garden path.
