Please recommend, help to choose! Books of chess combinations !?

ICT-1 is really good actually for tactic pattern recognition. For advanced 2000 chess.com players , who already had done years of simple tactics, will find it beginner stuff.

Thanks for the clarification and history.

Well, that is a bunch of bull$#!+ on Kalinichenko’s, whoever Kalinichenko’s publisher’s, Convekta’s, and ChessBase’ parts. That sucks for Renko. If I were him, I’d publish my own Encyclopaedia of Combinations and dare those b!+€3$, Kalinichenko and ChessBase (throwing Renko under the bus, and not selling his program anymore, while Convekta continues to giving credit and profits not to Renko), to come after me.

To my knowledge Convekta has nothing to do with plagiarized Kalinichenko book.

He actually has published it in 5 volumes as "Anthology of Chess Combinations" with 20,000 positions. uri65 is correct, Convekta had nothing do with this.

Is there no international law against this kind of blatant plagiarism? Seems odd that the premiere chess software company of the world would allow a major rival to do this without retaliation.

There was no major rival publisher in this story - Kalinichenko has published his plagiarized book with some small little known company.

I have exchanged few mails with George Renko in the past. Here's what he said about this:

"Nikolaj Kalinichenko from Russia stole my CD "Intensive Course Tactics" and published as a book under his name. ChessBase company has copyright on this CD but decided that it doesn't worth it to do anything in this regard."

As far a I know George Renko has published 5 CDs with ChessBase:

  • Intensive Chess Tactics
  • Intensive Chess Tactics 2
  • The Great ABC of Tactic
  • Killer Moves
  • Deadly Threats

They are all excellent. Unfortunately it looks like none of them is available for purchase anymore.

So this book or CD course doesn't matter, what level is it for?  Beginner?  Intermediate?  Advanced?

Are you interested only in books? I think those programs can be found as apps (Chess King) or CD’s (Convekta/Chessok) ...

Chess Combinations Vol.1
Chess Combinations Vol.2

Encyclopaedia of Chess Combinations Vol.1
Encyclopaedia of Chess Combinations Vol.2
Encyclopaedia of Chess Combinations Vol.3

Encyclopaedia of Middlegames I
Encyclopaedia of Middlegames II
Encyclopaedia of Middlegames III
Encyclopaedia of Middlegames IV
Encyclopaedia of Middlegames V

Books are much better ! More convenient too. Try taking your laptop around with everywhere you're going, plus look for charger socket , instead all I need is light and small handbag or backpack whatever...

All these courses (and many more) are available from ChessKing https://learn.chessking.com/  for any platform. I bought a Lifetime subscription for some 60 courses Web/Android/iOS for 8000 RUB. Then you can use it on any mobile device, IMO much better than a book.

Encyclopaedia of Chess Combinations is separate, 3 volumes cost 1400 RUB. I didn't buy it because their main 60 courses are enough for me for 10 years at least.

So this book(Kalinichenko's) or CD course doesn't matter, what level is it for?  Beginner?  Intermediate?  Advanced?

Intensive Chess Tactics by George Renko is useful for 1400-2000 IMO.

It is different. It so happened with the same name. ICT-1 is for beginners to 1700 in my opinion.

I don't want to get to a 1400

The level of the books are so different that you cannot compare them.

1. Laszlo Polgar's "5334" is for beginners. It shows basic mating patterns over and over without a single explanation. You figure the pattern yourself, which makes it harder to forget.

2. Kallichenko's "Энциклопедия шахматных комбинаций" is a tough book but unfortunately it is a stolen work. He simply copied George Renko's "Intensive Course Tactics" Chessbase CD into print without informing the publisher. So he is in my black list along with Schiller and Keene (except for his Nimzowitch book). The content is very good (anything by Renko is worth the money) but he will never earn money from me.

3. This is the first edition; it is simply called the white book. There is no black version of it. The hardcover is black but its dusk jacket is white. It was printed in 1980 IIRC. The later editions were computer checked and more exercises were added so try to get one of those if you can but this one itself is also worth gold.

2 and 3 will make you work very hard. These are not starting books though; they are exercise books for very strong players. Studying these two is like banging my head on the wall; I feel good when I stop  There are other nice tactics books which are both enjoyable and instructive.

Can you be more specific on the level of books please, especially Kalinichenko book.

On this thread few people said it's very easy book for begginers or intermediate  some say 1400-2000 rating, what do you think l?  Another person rates black-white jacket book 2000-2300 rating range how much differences is it to Kalinichenko’s book?  Thx.

Number 1 and 2 are for beginners. I consider 1980 Informator black edition as their best edition. I did not know white edition has same contents. Your 2000 chess.com rating is already very advanced I could not believe 1 & 2 as one of your options.

Can you elaborate your answer on Kalinichenko’s book is for begginers ?  How do you low that?

Ok I do agree that number 1 which is polgar book is for begginers or maximum intermediate players even in Russia it's quite popular for kids.

But can you explain more please why Kalinichenko’s book is for begginers or up to 2000 level as you say , did you actually looked at it or just saying that?

I'm need more info because I'm planning or spending  $ and purchasing either black edition book or Kalinichenko’s book , but I need more advanced book preferably 1800 - 2400

Seems like you know a lot of information, I'm in Russia and planning on getting one or two books on combinations for advanced players 1800-2400 something challenging do you know any good russian books maybe?

StyleGiant

I can say it is for beginners because the first one thousand exercises solutions can be solved in an instant and within 3 secs. The second thousand solutions within 15 seconds each exercise.

You know there is 4000 exercises, so how can you rate all book (all 4000) and give your verdict that the entire book is for begginers or intermediate?

First I like to hear from you is where do you take your information from?  Do you own this book?  Or .... ?

StyleGiant

I rate it perfect 10 for beginners to intermediate. But you are alreafy an expert. A chess friend in the chess park had the CD's snd his laptop. About plagiarism I just read it around the internet and it was confirmed by many.

Thank you for the compliment. My knowledge of chess books is definitely more than my chess knowledge. You may find the following interesting:

  1. Chess Puzzle Book (ШАХМАТЫ. ПРАКТИКУМ ПО ТАКТИКЕ И СТРАТЕГИИ) by Nunn.
  2. Improve Your Chess Tactics (ВАШ РЕШАЮЩИЙ ХОД. УЧЕБНИК ШАХМАТНОЙ КОМБИНАЦИИ. ПРАКТИКУМ) by Neishtadt.
  3. Perfect Your Chess (САМОУЧИТЕЛЬ ДЛЯ ШАХМАТИСТОВ ВЫСОКОЙ КВАЛИФИКАЦИИ) by Volokitin and Grabinsky.
  4. The Attacking Manual (АТАКА В ШАХМАТНОЙ ПАРТИИ) in 3 volumes by Aaagard.
  5. Number 4 can be followed by GM Preperation Attack and Defence but it is not published in Russian yet as far as I know.
  6. Chess Middlegame by Laszlo Polgar. Very hard to find these days as it is out of print. Maybe Eksmo will publish it in Russian as they did with  the 5334. If they will, it will be worth waiting for.
  7. School of Chess Excellence 2, Tactical Play (ШКОЛА ВЫСШЕГО МАСТЕРСТВА Т.2. КОМБИНАЦИОННАЯ ИГРА) by Dvoretsky.

You cannot go wrong with the "Encyclopedia of Chess Combinations". You know my feelings about Kalinchenko so I am not going to write about it. Lastly you may find this blog interesting.

Take care,

I'm not familiar with the Kalinichenko book.

The Polgar book is primarily made up of a lot of (often rather artificial) "mate in 1, 2, and 3 moves" type problems.  It is not a bad book, but I am not sure it is what you are looking for.

The black version of the Enciclopedia of Chess Middlegame Combinations is a very good book and the only tactics book I used when I was between 2000 and 2300 ELO.  I believe there are more recent editions of this book, but they may be more expensive.  Anyway, the black version is very good, and I would recommend it.

It's from Kalinichenko’s book. Can you tell (roughly ) what level is it ?
