Post your library size set

I think many people here have at least one library size set for analyzing or when there isn't much space in the study room. I prefer library size over full size when analyzing games, it just plays quicker.

Let's see what you have, after all we love pictures here happy.png

I'm not sure what a library set is. Is it small set or does 'library' refer to using set to study the game?

Here's the set I use most often for study sessions. It's a weighted plastic tournament type set. Not too big or too small and fits my silicone board nicely.

Library size is kings 2.75 inches - I think

Staunton size 4 is usually called library size set. Actually, that's a good question why it's called library. I don't know either why it's called library.

Edit: yeah you're right mr Matt, library size is 2.75 or Staunton 3. I wonder how I come up with Staunton 4?

So guessing 'library' must mean small but why use the term library to refer to a small chess set.

Originally meant for use in the libraries of houses in Victorian Britain I think. Although why that meant they had to be small I’ve no idea.

Ahh right I see. Did try to google but couldn't find anything.

Here's the set I use - it's weighted, which is really unusual for such a small set, in my experience

Maybe they had to be smaller in size as it’s not just about chess set or even the chess book you are reading. There has to be room for a cigar ashtray and a lovely glass of Scotch with it. How else would we have the lovely patina on these antique chess sets. Nowadays that would be a Pizza with some nice chilled Beer. tongue.pngtongue.png

I have a Sultan Library chess set from TCE (posted earlier) and the other is a plastic one.
This plastic set is the same as the one available on ChessGameShop Slovenia,

75mm K.H Study Set.

This is my TCE Sultan Library Set. 3" KH and 1.4" King base (posted in another thread before.)
Chessboard is a Repchapados 15.75" walnut maple purchased from Regency Uk.

(Picture #1 is Izmet's Magnetic Chess board.)

Really fits in with my multi monitor set up on my study table.

Before I contacted AIW/TCE I actually wrote to Gregor at Noj, asking if it's
possible to get a Noj Dubrovnik in a Library(smaller) version.

This is a light/medium weight chess set used by Bobby Fischer for study/analysis purpose,
ideally it is best suited for a Library version as well. Gregor replied that
there is no demand for a smaller set and I quote him, "somehow I am
not sure that other collectors would be interested for smaller pieces,
specially USA where most of them wants bigger and heavier pieces."

Nowadays the standard for Library version is WC Studio Set. It's based on 1.75 chess squares,
so ideally a Library version should be somewhere around 1.4" king base.

I know Michael is interested in a Library version of Dubrovnik, maybe we could set up
a separate thread and see if others are interested as well ?

If not Gregor, maybe convince Mandeep for a smaller version of the Dubrovnik ?

Oh yes I'm definitely up for their design in library size, preferably in any other woods than ebony but I'll take ebony as well if that's the only version they're willing to bring out.

That's a funny chess board, is it part of modular chess board?

It's a four piece magnetic chessboard by Izmet Fekali.

This one,

re the Dubrovnik, making it in ebony is nothing short of an atrocity wink.png

I asked Mandeep about maple and he said Nope. But they are offering it in boxwood and mahogany, which is anytime better than ebony. He is agreeable to an Unweighted Dubrovnik, which would be ideal for a Library set.

I think it is. For me library size sits between tournament size and travel / mini chess set so any set that fits on 1.75" board is library size.

Like ms Claudia, I've tried to find out what defines a library size chess set but can't find anything official about it. Makes me wonder who came up with it.

btw, I believe it was you that got me to get myself one of those beautiful board...mine is a cheap one from Etsy.

I have 3 sets that are library size. They are nothing special.

3 1/4" French Lardy set from thechessstore.com

3 1/4" vintage Gallant Knight set I got off of eBay.

3 1/4" Popular Staunton from House of Chess.

3 1/4" is the biggest size in the library size category. It is also the smallest set I am willing to play with OTB. Anything smaller it is too small for my liking for gameplay.

Very nice sets everyone. Mine does not meet size requirements for this thread, but it is a very nice set for something very inexpensive in my opinion. It also fits perfectly in my tight quarters.

I agree, I love seeing all the different styles and boards out there.

My adored 3" weighted Lardy 1970's on a 1.75" square. This set is immaculate considering it is about 45 years old. This is the sweet Chevron version and was re-felted with grey for contrast.

Here's one of my 2.75" sets on an old walnut and birch Drueke board.  Not sure what exactly this set is, my hunch is early 1900's German (or even American?).  Edit: I believe the set is American Chess Company circa 1900

Very nice Lardy.  The carving looks great and the grain on that Jura boxwood is very pretty!
