This one is about 20 years old the Pegboard pieces are metal and the case I believe is walnut
Post Your portables

Those are awesome, the second set reminds me of an early computer s
Game I had makes you wonder why there aren't more in that grey white scheme.

now i see them. I got a couple of those gold and silver sets. I found the colors very distracing. I finally just rattle canned the pieces. White and primer brown. I use them for sidelines or when reading a book. I glued them open as well. I just store the pieces in a little lock and lock container. I'll post pics later.

I have a larger one in black and white, which is actually a very nice set for travel. I did not glue that one open.
I also have a wooden one with weak magnets, one bishop isn't magnetic at all. Those pieces work great on the other silver and black board. I guess the wood veneer is too thick for the puny magnets.
I use these small ones a lot. At first I painted them black and white because that's the can I grabbed first. I later found the glossy black to be too distracting so I re-painted them flat brick colored primer. I love them now!

I have those ones glued open. I use them to work out sidelines or as place keepers on my larger set. I have 2 wooden sets which are very nice but since I got the nice brown vinyl board, I just leave my heavy plastic pieces set up. Here is where I try to analyse games or replay famous ones.

You can see the little plastic container I put the smaller pieces in. It's still portable. It's easier to keep all the chess stuff on one shelf with boxes.

The Knights on the small magnetic set are really interesting they have a curve to them , different from the typical jagged flame manes on most knights. It's probaably not a bad idea the magnetism is weakening. I always had a little trepidation having anything magnetic by my computer or tablet.
The peg board set solves that.

Just one of them but I love how strong the magnets are:
And the pieces are a great size, would be easy to play on even in lowlight

(Mike Drop) Deafdrummer and RCmacmillan those you consider travel sets kill most of the full size sets people post on this site. Not much better than that to consider as your " casual game tracking" sets.

DeafDrummer, Yes, I'm used to seeing poorly made sets too small to actually play on.
the sets you guys posted are small enough to travel but a size that is easily playable. and you can see the quality of design.

It would be fun to start a thread of unplayable sets we were given as gifts.
I had a wooden set and the Bishops and Knights were shaped like eggs,

DeafDrummer' you know, it's funny when I judge the quality as well as playablility on different sets , I always look at the knights specifically the detail on the eyes .
Some near miss sets everything on the set is right but the knight's eyes were done as an after thought. They look like eyes you might see in a low budget Zombie movie.
Your Knight's avatar the eyes and the Mane are excellent. The rounded base is another mark of a real collectible set.
This set with homemade board I've had for 45 years.
I traded a magnetic travel set for it to a pilot serving in Viet Nam.
It was probably old when I got it, but not as old as me HaHaHa
